42 No 6 ■ Graymoor Ecumenical &Interreligious Institute ■ June 2013 \n# A Ministry ofthe Franciscan Friars ofthe Atonement\n\nThe Church Towards a Common VisionCommentary and Appraisal \n —By David Carter \nthings in Christ by seeking,in the power of the Spirit, the unity ofthe Church as sign, instrument and first fruits of the Kingdom.Itis for them,in the power of the Spirit,to grow in that communionin which they are both enfolded and enabled for service until, asthe decree Dei Verbum of Vatican II puts it,all the promises of Godare fulfilled in them. \nn 1989,the Faith and Order Commission of the WCC initiateda study intended to do for ecclesiology what the Lima statement,Baptism,Eucharist,Ministry of 1982 had done for those subjects. The aim was to present a potentially commonly acceptable visionin ecclesiology which would help the churches to recognize thevery considerable progress made in earlier dialogues, bilateral andmultilateral, and act as a spur towards further rapprochement andconsensus in those areas that remained problematic. In a very realsense the process emerged from a number of suggestions made bychurches and others responding to BEM to the effect that morework was needed in ecclesiology in order to aid further convergenceon ministry and sacraments. \nThe Lord’s Prayer is the one prayer that can be encounteredin almost every Christian act of worship, even in churches thatotherwise tend to shun set liturgies.Accordingly the very firstparagraph of the Introduction to the Report makes the basic point, which should resonate with the conscience of every Christian,that\"to pray that the Lord’s will be done thus necessarily requires awholehearted endeavour to embrace his will for and his gift of unity.\" \nThe process produced two interim reports, the first,in 1998,entitled The Nature and Purpose of the Church. This was dulycommended for study and response by the churches.Among themany comments received was a strong feeling that the centralimportance of mission had been underplayed.Acceptance of thiswas reflected in the greater emphasis given to it in the secondinterim document,Nature and Mission of the Church, produced in2005.This was also commended for study and response by thechurches and the Commission proceeded to produce a final report, which was duly received by the Central Committee at its meetingin September 2012 and finally published in March 2013. \nFor those familiar with the two earlier reports, the elements ofcontinuity will be clear.Where the report gains over its predecessorsis in the extent to which it ties ends together and tightens up itspresentation. Some may feel that its presentation of some themesis too idealistic, but this is in accord with the mandate of theCommission and indicated in the title of the report. As has beenrepeatedly stressed in recent years, the unity of the Church is bothgift and calling. It is for Christians and their churches to affirmand respond to the Great Plan of the Father which is to unite all \nAfter the brief introduction, the report is divided into fourmain chapters, followed finally by an historical account of theprocess that led all the way from the first world Faith and OrderConference in 1927 to the present statement. \nThe four chapters are respectively entitled,God’s Mission andthe Unity of the Church,The Church of the Triune God,The ChurchGrowing in Communion and The Church in and for the World. \nGod's Mission and the Unity of the Church \nChapter 1 describes the Church and its mission as \"rooted inthe vision of God's great design for all creation, the kingdomwhich was promised by and manifested in Jesus Christ.”It adds \ncontinued on page 2 \nDavid Carter is a church historian and a member of the
