Catholic Actionblisb 8ATIOEALCOUNCIL OF CATHOLIC WOMEN 1312 ALasacdbuzs Aue,N.W..Wabzngtons DC \nMay 1954 \nVol.I Nos.1-2 \n# A Message\n\n8an8er \nfrom \nMost Reverend Richard J.Cushing,D.D.,LL.D. \n# Iay acto leades sc Hoy Eathe made atondy nd eln of Cntolie\n\nHe struck out at the idea that \"Catholic Action,\"as we understand it,is a contemporary and novel idea,a modern reaction against an alleged\"Clericalism\"which,it is pretended, grew up after the Council of Trentand as a by-product of the disciplines introduced by the Counter-Reformation. \nThe Holy Father pointed out that precisely in that period of supposedisolation of the laity from the activity of the Church, lay Catholics had, infact, written a singularly glorious chapter of apostolic works. \nStudents of history and of the theology of the Church readily perceivehow accurate is the contention of the Holy Father concerning the perennialand proper place of the laity in Catholic Action at every age of Church his-tory.They realize, too, that in each such age the outstanding examples ofCatholic lay zeal are frequently women. \nIn this Marian Year it is appropriate to note that when the Apostlesgathered in the Cenacle to plan the fulfllment of Christ's mandate to HisChurch there was present in their midst a woman, indeed a lay woman, whois the patroness of Catholic Action as of all things else pertaining to herSon's kingdom on earth. \nIf we are to understand by Catholic Action the service of Christ inwhatever way He seeks our ministrations at any given moment, then surelythe holy women who consoled Him on the way to Calvary or went forth topay Him affectionate tribute on the first Easter were pioneers in CatholicAction. \nSo,too,if we mean by Catholic Action cooperation with Christ's repre- \nsentatives in whatever works depend on them, then we must hail as leadersof Catholic Action in the Infant Church those women whom St.Paul salutesin his epistles as having seconded his efforts so loyally and in so manydifferent ways. \nWho does not see in the scholarly women who studied theology underSt.Jerome's direction typical participants in the Catholic Action of their day?Is not St.Monica an exemplar of many-sided Catholic Action not only as adevout mother but also as a co-worker with Ambrose, her bishop?Fabiolain her work for the sick is another typical Catholic woman engaged in the layaction appropriate to her place and period. \nSo the list might be expanded indefinitely. The litany of women inCatholic Action would bring together names from every language, tribe, nation, class and vocation. It would have for its first name Mary, the Motherof Christ;its latest names would include the readers of this bulletin—daughters in one sense, sisters in another of the Lily of Israel who becamethe First Catholic Woman and the leader forever of feminine lay action inthe life of the Church. \nOur own age has not turned up any new idea in its recognition of theneed and the nature of Catholic Action. As the Holy Father reminds us,it has simply given new emphasis to an idea as old as the Church itself.Ithas offered new channels for the release of old apostolic energies. It hasattracted into new fields of dedicated effort the old desires of Catholicwomen to be identified with the infinitely varied work of Christ in HisChurch. \nPerhaps we may be pardoned if we think that the response of the laityin our generation reveals a new vitality and unprecedented interest. It istrue that the concept of Catholic Action is nothing modern;however,it isalso true that the modern response to the call to Catholic Action is some-thing quite special and heartwarming. \nTo this I can and must bear willing witness. As Episcopal Chairmanof the Lay Organizations Department of N.C.W.C.,I am in a unique posi-tion to testify to the place and power of women in Catholic Action.I cannotthink of an area of social, educational, civic or Church life to which theirapostolic influence does not extend. \nIf,as is unhappily the fact, the problems of t","cbCaibf0MNii7wNy","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaibf0MNii7wNy","pdf",380324,"English","# A Message\n## Years of
