Without the influence of shows such as Tom and Jerry, Powerpuff Girls, Ed, Edd, n Eddy, Teen Titans, among all of the other shows I grew up loving, I doubt that I would be the same person I am today. Even now, I still watch these shows and feel that same sense of nostalgia, a love for an earlier time in my life. Animation has firmly fixed itself in our culture, as video games, television, and movies each make use of it in one form or another, whether it be 2D or 3D. However, despite all of its monumental offerings to the world, we do not see animation talked about in the same vein as the artistic world’s greatest accomplishments. While artist movements such as the Renaissance, Surrealist Movement, and Expressionism are talked at length within the halls of colleges, the history of animation goes greatly underappreciated despite animation’s massive impact on the world stage. With this thesis, I hope to change and encourage an interest in afield of artistic historical study that which I feel deserves its time of day. \nThis thesis is intended to visualize and conceptualize the history of the animated medium, through the creation of an animated short film that follows a cartoon mancomedically thrust backwards in time by an offscreen narrator. As a person who has a love and passion for the shows of his youth, I have always marveled at how much animation has transformed and adapted with the times. Animation has gone from messy, hand-drawn, monthlong experiments, such as Emile Kohl’s Fantasmagorie in 1905 (Cavalier 50-53), to having entire industry-standard, computerized pipelines dedicated to getting the cleanest animation out in the shortest stretches of time. With these evolutions came fluxes and shifts within those styles, \nnew approaches and innovations that changed the landscape of animation as it is today. These fluxes and shifts, so dynamic in their nature, can be divided into separate eras, chronologically detailing the flashpoints in animation history. In this project, I have created an animation that details these shifts not only narratively, but stylistically, shifting my animation medium and style to best reflect the period of animation history I’m seeking to emulate. In doing this, has created a fun, educational film that demonstrates the evolution of the animation medium to a casual audience. \nInspirations \nThere are a number of inspirations that have encouraged me to create this animation in the way that I have want to create it, prominent ones being the Looney Tunes episode “Duck Amuck,”and the American television show, Amazing World of Gumball, which used a variety of animation styles and played with animation concepts in order to tell its stories. \n“Duck Amuck” is a Looney Tunes short focusing on Daffy Duck as he struggles to act out a cohesive story. Poor Daffy begins the episode happily acting out the part of a Musketeer, before realizing the scenery isn’t drawn and demanding that the artist writes a new one. What transpires is a massive, one-sided battle between the helpless Daffy and his creator, as Daffy is sent into different environments and situations, forcing him to adapt to each one as a stage actor would when told to improvise. The episode relies heavily upon toying with the conventions of animated cinema, using jokes including toying with close-ups, playing with the outlines of the box, and ‘erasing’ and ‘drawing’ Daffy to mess with his form. With this \ninspiration, I sought to create a similar experience in Man Out of Time, one in which the character a","cbCaiax8BYlst9lp","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiax8BYlst9lp","pdf",912918,44,"English","# Section 1: Introduction\n## Inspirations\n# Section 2: Prior Research\n## Literature Review","[{\"question\":\"What is the core idea behind “A Man Out of Time” as a thesis project?\",\"answer\":\"The thesis uses an animated short film concept to visualize and conceptualize animation history by moving a cartoon character backward in time through narration, while shifting animation styles to match historical eras.\"},{\"question\":\"Which works inspired the project’s approach and tone?\",\"answer\":\"The project is inspired by Looney Tunes’ “Duck Amuck” for character-to-creator interaction and by “The Amazing World of Gumball” for mixing traditional 2D animation with CGI and experimenting with style.\"},{\"question\":\"How does the thesis structure animation history within the film?\",\"answer\":\"Animation history is divided into separate chronological eras, and the film adapts both narratively and stylistically to reflect the specific period being emulated for an educational yet entertaining experience.\"}]","A Man Out of Time - An Animated Glimpse into Animated History - Thesis | PDF",111]
