Olah trace a scientific life shaped by research, teaching, and evolving curiosity about the broader meaning and limits of science. The narrative frames chemistry as an extraordinarily wide “central science,” connects personal milestones to major intellectual pursuits, and discusses the philosophical questions science cannot fully answer. For years I resisted, mainly because I was still fully occupied with research, teaching, and various other commitments. I also felt it was not yet time to look back instead of ahead. However, I slowly began to realize that, because none of us knows how much time is still left, it might be ill advised to say ‘‘it is not yet the right time.’’ I therefore started to collect material and to organize my thoughts for a book. \nIt soon became clear that this project would be very different from any writing I had done before. I recognized that my goal was not only to give autobiographical recollections of my life and my career in chemistry but also to express some of my more general thoughts. These touch on varied topics, including the broader meaning of science in the quest fo","cbCaihrhMfvov35k","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaihrhMfvov35k","pdf",2965362,288,"English","# Preface\n## Introduction\n## Perspectives on Science\n## Chemistry: The Multifaceted Central Science\n## Growing up in Hungary and Turning to Chemistry\n## Early Research and Teaching: Departing the Shadow of Emil Fischer\n## Move to North America\n## Return to Academia—The Cleveland Years\n## Moving to Los Angeles\n## “Every Scientist Needs Good Enemies”\n## The Nobel Prize\n## Post-Nobel Years\n## Societal and Environmental Challenges of Hydrocarbons\n## Gone My Way\n## Appendix\n## Index","[{\"question\":\"Why did George A.
