Water gathered in the cracks of broken stone and pooled beneath the arches of abandoned forums where weeds now grew between the paving slabs.  \nLucius Cassianus Varro stood motionless beneath the portico of his townhouse and stared toward the wall.  \nEven through the curtain of rain, he could see where repairs had recently been made. Fresh stone patches marred the older Roman work, desperate attempts to preserve what remained of imperial authority in Britannia.  \nIt would not hold.  \nEveryone knew it.  \nThe Saxons had grown bolder with every passing season. Raiders descended upon the eastern coast like wolves, while the northern tribes pressed farther south each year. The legions that once protected Britannia were gone, recalled decades before to defend a dying empire across the sea.  \nRome no longer guarded Britain.  \nRome scarcely guarded Rome.  \nBehind Lucius, the house stood silent.  \nToo silent.  \nOnce, laughter had echoed through the atrium. His wife’s soft voice had mingled with the patter of little feet across the mosaic floor. Servants had hurried through the halls carrying trays of figs, wine, and lamp oil while clients waited patiently each morning for audience with the wealthy  \nmerchant whose ships carried wool, tin, and imported luxuries between Britannia and Gaul.  \nNow there remained only emptiness.  \nHis wife had died over the winter before from a fever that swept through the city. His son—  \nLucius closed his eyes.  \nHis son had survived her only briefly.  \nMarcus had been sixteen when the coughing sickness came. The physician had called it a corruption of the lungs. Blood stained the boy’slips within days. By the end, Marcus had been too weak even to lift his own hand.  \nLucius still heard the sound of that terrible breathing in the night. The gods had taken everything.  \nA sharp knock sounded at the outer gate.  \nLucius turned as his steward entered the courtyard, soaked through despite his heavy cloak.  \n“They have begun leaving already,” Gaius said without preamble.“More wagons departed through Ludgate before dawn. The magistrate’s household among them.”  \nLucius gave a bitter laugh.  \n“The magistrates abandoned their duties long ago. Why should they not abandon the city as well?”  \nGaius hesitated.“My lord... we should depart tonight.”  \nLucius looked once more toward the wall.  \nBeyond it lay chaos.  \nBeyond it lay Saxons.  \nHe had heard the stories from the eastern settlements. Villas burned. Temples desecrated. Roman families slaughtered or driven into the countryside like beggars.  \nHe would not allow generations of wealth to fall into barbarian hands.“Bring the chests,” he ordered quietly.  \nGaius froze.“All of them?”  \n“All.”  \nThe steward stared at him in alarm.“My lord, there are too many. We cannot possibly transport such weight safely to the coast.”  \n“We are not taking them.”  \nUnderstanding dawned slowly across the older man’s face.  \n“You mean to bury them.”","cbCaieeBLR4NEwmF","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaieeBLR4NEwmF","pdf",2438390,404,"English","en",105,"# Prologue\n## Chapter 1\n## Chapter 2\n## Chapter 3\n## Chapter 4\n## Chapter 5\n## Chapter 6\n## Chapter 7\n## Chapter 8\n## Chapter 9\n## Chapter 10\n## Chapter 11\n## Chapter 12\n## Chapter 13\n## Chapter 14\n## Chapter 15\n## Chapter 16\n## Chapter 17\n## Chapter 18\n## Chapter 19\n## Chapter 20\n## Chapter 21\n## Chapter 22\n## Chapter 23\n## Chapter 24\n## Chapter 25\n## Chapter 26\n## Chapter 27\n## Chapter 28\n## Chapter 29\n## Chapter 30\n## Chapter 31\n## Chapter 32\n# Epilogue\n# About the Author","[{\"question\":\"What historical setting does the prologue describe?\",\"answer\":\"The prologue is set in A.D. 410 in Londinium, Britannia, during escalating threats as Roman protection collapses.\"},{\"question\":\"Why does Lucius decide not to transport the chests?\",\"answer\":\"Lucius orders all the chests brought, but not taken to the coast;
