JOURNAL FOR PROMOTING CHRISTIAN UNITY \nA NEW JOURNAL \nbetween the Catholic Church and ReformedChristianity. We are, alas, too far apart.Butwhere real progress has been made, and is be-ing made,is in the area of theology. The ecumen-ical dialogue has initiated a transformation inChristian theology. Each tradition has becomeaware of its own limitations imposed on it bypast controversies, and hence it reaches out, bygreater fidelity to the sources of revelation, toattain a more balanced and more universal vi-sion of the gospel.By reporting on these devel-opments The Ecumenist hopes to encourage andfacilitate theological studies in areas that areecumenically significant. \nCINCE the ecumenical movement is constantlynandin in the Christian uorld it is ofexpanding in the Christian world,it is ofgreatest importance to follow the significantevents and the theological developments asso-ciated with them.Only if we are well-informed,will we discover our own contribution to thecause of Christian unity. \nThe same purpose of informing and encour-aging the advance of ecumenical theology willdetermine our selection of ecclesiastical docu-ments.The number of papal and episcopalstatements expressing a positive ecumenical ap-proach is continually increasing.Since we are, ofcourse, unable to reprint them in full,we shalllist those that are most relevant to the English-speaking world, indicate where they can befound and present a few significant excerpts. \nThe same goal of informing and encouragingecumenical studies determines our book notes:we shall indicate the contribution that contem-porary studies are making to the common questfor Christian unity. \nSince there is a tendency among us to look forquick results of ecumenical dialogue and to goon repeating a few happy phrases,we wish toemphasize that what the ecumenical movementneeds is scholarship, research and a creative ap-proach to theological questious. As Catholicswe often believe that we have all the answers. We tend to think that all that is true has beenwritten,so that the work of the theologian issimply to find the right page in the right book. One of the most precious fruits of the ecumenicalexperience is the insight that we have much todiscover in areas as yet unexplored. \nThe second Vatican Council will multiply theneeds and the opportunities for ecumenicalstudies.G.B. \nWhile there are several Protestant publica-tions dealing with ecumenical matters, theirprincipal concern is the dialogue among theChurches of the Reformation.Dialogue on alarge scale between Catholics and the Christiansof the Reformed Churches is only beginning inthe English-speaking world. For long the inter-national quarterly review Unitas, edited inRome in three languages, has been the onlyCatholic publication on ecumenism in English.Seeing the growing interest in the ecumenicalmovement in North America and the consequenttransformation of the spiritual climate amongthe Churches,we feel that the publication of ajournal on the Catholic-Protestant dialogue ful-fills a real need. \nThe aim and purpose of The Ecumenist is tosupport and advance the ecumenical movement.First of all we wish to inform. Many things arehappening within the Churches which must bereported and, more important still, interpreted. When the Archbishop of Canterbury or themoderator of the Church of Scotland visits PopeJohn XXIII,we read an account of it in thenewspapers. But what do such visits signify? Are they occurrences which modify the relation-ship among Catholics,Anglicans and Protestantsin our own countries?Such events demand inter-pretation. \nEqually,if not more important,is the inter-pretation of the theological developments takingplace in all the Churches. \nTheology is the proper area in which the ecu-menical movement should score its most decisiveresults. While the ecumenical movement amongProtestant Churches may lead to negotiationsand the discussion of reunion,we do not for amoment think that this stage has been reached \n# THE SECOND VATICAN COUNCIL A","cbCaio8XqbALVdxB","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaio8XqbALVdxB","pdf",1045974,16,"English","# A Journal for Promoting Christian
