Conduct a class research project on disease-causing bacteria. Encourage students to find out what bacteria are, what they do and how we can avoid them. Based upon the information gathered, students can compare the Black Death with other illnesses, like influenza and smallpox. Students can use James Giblin’s When Plague Strikes: The Black Death, Smallpox, AIDS (HarperCollins, 1995) as a resource. \n• Conduct a class research project on the Crusades. Each small group can be responsible for one of the eight major medieval Crusades between 1095 and 1291.To present the information that they have researched, groups can act as newspaper reporters and write articles that detail the“who, what, when, where and why” of these wars. \n• Students can learn more about the Hundred Years War and one of its most famous warriors, Joan of Arc, by reading Diane Stanley’s Joan of Arc (Morrow Junior Books, 1998) . Discuss with students what Joan of Arc represented to this time period. Are there others throughout history who represented similar things? \n• Students can get a sense of what life was like for a crusader by reading letters actually written by this fighting force. (See [www.fordham](www.fordham). edu/halsall/source/cde-letters.html for electronic versions.) Based upon what students have learned about this series of holy wars, they can each write a letter as if they were crusaders, including details of time and place. \n• Students can research what types of inventions were developed at this time. ([See www.mhs.ox.ac.uk/epact/ for](See www.mhs.ox.ac.uk/epact/ for) images and descriptions of medieval inventions and developments.) Based on their research in this area, do students feel that the medieval time was a time of scientific advancement? \nSuggested Internet Resources \nPeriodically, Internet Resources are updated on our Web site at [www.LibraryVideo.com](www.LibraryVideo.com) \n• [www.fordham.edu/halsall/basis/einhard.html](www.fordham.edu/halsall/basis/einhard.html) \nThis site from the Medieval Sourcebook offers an electronic version of“The Life of Charlemagne”written by Einhard, Charlemagne’s biographer. This document provides detailed primary source information about Charlemagne’s reign, personality and family history. \n• [library.thinkguest.org/3708/medmain.htm](library.thinkguest.org/3708/medmain.htm) \nThis ThinkQuest site, created by students for students, has information about life in the Middle Ages, heraldry and the Crusades. \n5 \nSuggested Print Resources \n• Dunn, John M.
