OF-THE-MONTH CLUB News,APRIL 1956
NYAGNA CARTA·Jiom a mural by Boardman Robinson(see paye 11
For May:The first volume of Winston Churchill'sA History of the English-Speaking Peoples
TH EMay sELE C TIONA
HISTORYOF THEENGLISHSPEAKINGPEOPLES
# Volume OneThe Birth of Britain

WinstonChurchill
$450
[FROM THE PREFACE]
T IS NEARLY TWENTY YEARSago that I made the arrangementswhich resulted in this book.At theoutbreak of the war about half amillion words were duly delivered.Of course, there was still much to bedone in proof-reading when I went
to the Admiralty on September 3,1939.Allthis was set aside.During six years of war,and an even longer period in which I wasoccupied with my war memoirs, the bookslumbered peacefully. It is only now whenthings have quietened down that I presentto the public A HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH-SPEAKING PEOPLES.
If there was need for it before, that hascertainly not passed away. For the secondtime in the present century the British Empireand the United States have stood togetherfacing the perils of war on the largest scaleknown among men,and since the cannonsceased to fire and the bombs to burst we havebecome more conscious of our common dutyto the human race.Language, law, and theprocesses by which we have come into beingalready afforded a unique foundation fordrawing together and portraying a concertedtask.I thought when I began that such a unitymight well notably influence the destiny ofthe world.Certainly I do not feel that theneed for this has diminished in any way in thetwenty years that have passed.
On the contrary, the theme of the work has
grown in strength and reality and humanthought is broadened.Vast numbers of peopleon both sides of the Atlantic and throughoutthe British Commonwealth of Nations havefelt a sense of brotherhood.A new generationis at hand. Many practical steps have beentaken which carry us far.Thinking primarilyof the English-speaking peoples in no wayimplies any sense of restriction. It does notmean canalising the development of worldaffairs, nor does it prevent the erection ofstructures like United Europe or other similargroupings which may all find their place inthe world organisation we have set on foot.It rather helps to invest them with life andtruth. There is a growing feeling that theEnglish-speaking peoples might point a fingershowing the way if things went right, andcould of course defend themselves,so far as
any of us have the power,if things wentwrong.
This book does not seek to rival the worksof professional historians. It aims rather topresent a personal view on the processeswhereby English-speaking peoples throughoutthe world have achieved their distinctive posi-tion and character.I write about the thingsin our past that appear significant to me andI do so as one not without some experienceof historical and violent events in our owntime.I use the term“English-speaking peo-ples”because there is no other that appliesboth to the inhabitants of the British Isles andto those independent nations who derive theirbeginnings, their speech, and many of theirinstitutions from England, and who now pre-serve,nourish,and develop them in theirown ways.

| TABLE OF CONTENTS
16.On the Anvil
I·THE ISLAND RACE
17.The Mother of Parliaments
1.Britannia
