in here for centuries! The bloods \nrushing to my brain.I've got to get out!Dexter pressed theOFF button on his vest, which allowed him to float tothe ground, and automatically opened the door of theweightlessness training unit. \n\"Four minutes,Dex,\"Ms.Luna said as he climbedout.\"Better than last time!\" \n“Still not enough to pass,\"Dex groaned.“WhenI'm in there,my nose gets stuffy,my head pounds, andI can't tell up from down.I think I'′m allergic to weight-lessness!Why not train me to repair robots instead?\" \nMs.Luna smiled. She couldn't dispute Dex's veryreal complaints.Without gravity, the planet's force thatattracts and holds objects, blood does rush to the head.A person does, indeed, get a stuffy and achy head. However,it wasn't this that made Dex flee the anti-gravity,or a-g,unit.Dex was scared! \nDex(and all of his classmates)had grown up on aspace station on Mars.Life on Mars was terrific.Rainand snow never spoiled travel plans or soccer games.Weather wasn't a factor in their lives because theentire colony was encased in a giant dome!Inside thedome, hundreds of mechanical units calculated justthe right amounts of oxygen, moisture, and heat. \nSchools,restaurants,theaters—the colony had itall. The population had mushroomed since it was firstfounded in 2147,and nearly a century later,Mars wasEarth's largest and most successful outpost. \n3 \nIn the beginning, the early space pioneers couldgrow only a limited number of crops in their small, covered greenhouses, such as potatoes, peas, wheat, and lettuce.Plants were essential food resources andkey to maintaining the carbon dioxide and oxygenbalance in the atmosphere.Plants also boosted \nhomesick pioneers'spirits, cheering them with colorand the taste of foods they'd enjoyed on Earth. \nWith time and progress came juicy, red tomatoesthat robots could harvest easily.People used everyvegetable. No one dared to waste any because grow-ing space was so limited. \nNow,however,a century of research had madeit possible to plant and harvest crops in greenhouseslocated outside the protective dome.Aided by huge, bright lamps that enabled plants to grow, hundredsof different fruits, vegetables, and grains had beenplanted on Martian soil with great success. \nBecause the colony's population (and,conse-quently,its food supply)had grown so rapidly, everymember of the colony age thirteen and up was \nexpected to help plant and harvest crops. To work inthe airless space outside the dome, each colonist hadto wear a space suit with an oxygen tank and a sturdyrope that was fastened to the ground.Without theseropes, weightless workers would float away into space. \nUnfortunately,the marvels of Martian
