A man who could have been anywhere between forty and sixty squinted at me. His paper hat sat jauntily on his head like a 1940s soldier might wear it, but the gray stubble on his cheeks ruined the military image. He wore a plastic nametag that said his name was Jesse.  \n“Getchya?” he rasped.  \n“I’ll take a gyro,” I said.  \nHe stared back wordlessly. Then I remembered what Ernie said about ordering it special.“With extra lettuce and sauce.”  \nThe man scratched his chin.“We ain’t got none of those. This is a taco truck.”  \nIt was my turn to stare. I ran Ernie’s words through my head again.“Ask for the gyro thingie,” he’d said.“And get extra salad and sauce.  \nIt’s the special. Say it exactly like that. That’s how they know to give you the piece.”  \nAt least, that’s what I think Ernie said. We were both high as fuck at the time, so maybe I didn’t hear him right. Or maybe he got it wrong. As I stood there in a stare-down with the old man, I started to wonder if maybe Ernie just made the whole fucking thing up. I mean, guns and tacos? How stupid is that? It was definitely starting to sound made up.  \n“Are you Jesse?” I asked, despite the nametag.  \n“Who the fuck are you?”  \n“I’m Tim.”  \n“Tim,” he mumbled, squinting at me.“I know you?”  \nI shook my head.“You might know Ernie, though.”  \n“Ernie with the lump on his face?”  \n“No.”  \n“Black Ernie, then?”  \n“No,” I lied, suddenly not wanting to say Ernie’s last name. The idea occurred to me that maybe this whole taco truck thing was set up by the cops. I’d slip him the money, and instead of a gyro and a piece, I’d get about six cops in black fatigues barreling out of the back of the truck, knocking me down and putting their fat knees across the back of my neck.  \n“There’s a lot of Ernies in the world, pal,” the old man said.  \n“It doesn’t matter,” I said. Then I spoke slowly and clearly.“Just give me a gyro, with extra salad and sauce, okay?” I held up a twenty between my first two fingers and flashed the small roll of bills in my palm.  \n“Jessie!” the old man called to the back of the truck.“We got gyros?”Jesus, how many Jessies can work on one food truck?  \n“No,” a woman’s voice floated back.“Try Niko’s. He comes by later, Ithink.”  \n“Come on,” I said, lowering my voice a little.“That’s what Ernie bought from you. Some pita bread, some spicy meat, a little feta.
