\nPREACE TO THE SECOND EDITION. \nAr the repeated request of many friends in India, and in view of the fact that Her Majesty's CivilService Commissioners for India have done the formeredition of this Grammar the honour to prescribe itto be studied by selected candidates for the IndiaCivil Service, that edition having been exhausted,Ihave prepared, and herewith offer to the public, asecond edition, revised and enlarged. \nTo the ten dialects presented in the earlier edition, three more have been added:viz.,the Mágadhí,theMaithilí,and the Naipálí,making thirteen which arenow exhibited in the Tables. The sections and Tableswhich exhibit the Bhojpuúrí and the Rajputana dia-lects have also been carefully revised, and amplifiedwith considerable new material. The brief section inthe lst edition(pp.44-49),on“Dialectie Peculiari-ties,\"has been enlarged to a full chapter(pp.65-80,of the present edition). The philologieal notes havebeen thoroughly revised, and to a considerable extentrewritten,in the light of the advance made since1876 in the scientifie investigation of the Aryan \nlangunges of India.I have found it impossible, however, having due regard to proper limitations ofproportion and space,to work out in detail all ofthe large number of additional forms given in theTables. But with the aid of the principles set forthin Chapters III.and IV.,and the abundant illustra-tions of their application which are given, the in-terested student,it is believed, will be able toinvestigate intelligently for himself forms which areleft unexplained. \nIn the Syntax,I have substituted for the PremSagar,to a considerable extent,as a souree of illus-tration,the Shakuntalá of Kálidás,as translated intoHindí by Rájá Lachhman Sinh,Deputy Collector, \nN.W.P.;which is now ordered as one of the subjectsof examination for the Indian Service.I have alsooceasionally introduced illustrations from other modernworks,as,especially, the drama of Eandhir aur PremMohin,by Lálá Shrí Nivás Dás,which is to becommended as of special value, for the variety ofdialect used by the different characters.I have, however, still retained many illustrative references tothe Pren Ságar, because, despite its very artificialstyle and provincial colour, yet,as a favourite authorityfor Puranic Hindooism of the Bhakti Márgí school,it is still, and is likely for some time to continueto be,a most popular religious book among themasses of North India, which therefore can be wiselyneglected by no missionary among them. \nVery considerable changes will be observed in someparts of the work,in the arrangement of the para-graphs,besides many minor verbal alterations, allwhich,it is hoped, will be found to conduce to greaterclearness and accuracy. \nI desire to express here my indebtedness to theauthors of the various criticisms of the lst edition, from which,in the preparation of this new edition,I have derived much valuable help.I have also toacknowledge with thanks the assistance rendered me,in reply to a circular sent out before the revision ofthe Grammar,by many valuabl","cbCaisOovqi0TfZL","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaisOovqi0TfZL","pdf",35549232,663,"English","#
