witha definite purpose in our spiritual life;each plays an essential partin God's merciful and generous plan for our sanctification.Theseare the fountains of our supernatural life as sons of God,heirs ofheaven,co-lovers and co-adorers with Jesus Christ. \nBecause they are so essential,it is immediately evident howimportant it is for us to foster and protect these gifts. This wedo,in the plan of God,by forming habits of judging and acting, habits which are at the same time ways of expressing our faithand hope and charity in a practical way. These habits of judgingand acting are the auxiliary virtues, the moral virtues, all of whichhinge on(that is the meaning of “cardinal”)four main moral vir-tues:prudence,temperance,fortitude,and justice. \nMoral virtues are natural habits of mind and will, acquiredthrough persistent practice, which incline us to perform acts pro-moting our end as men. These habits become supernatural throughthe norm of faith, but more especially through the motive of love ofGod,which proceeds from sanctifying grace in the soul. How im-portant,then,is that constant renewal of our intention of doingeverything for the love of God.Love is the necessary,life-giving in-gredient that turns a naturally good act into something Christian, supernatural, meritorious. It is as impossible to perform a super-natural act of temperance in mortal sin as to see with blinded eyes.We can say that we are acting for love of God,but the lack ofgrace nullifies and contradicts our motive;that act is naturallygood but not a bit meritorious. \n# Science of What to Desire and to Avoid\n\nThe first of these moral virtues which charity transforms intosomething supernatural is the companion of faith and is developed \nin the intellect, namely, prudence. This is the habit of judging con-cerning the right way to do things.Or as St.Augustine would defineit:“It is the science of what to desire and what to avoid.”And itis a science,a habit of mind that must be acquired through mucheffort and practice. It is a practical virtue in the sense that itis concerned with immediate judgments about what is to be donehere and now,as well as in the future. This is the virtue whichregulates our thoughts, our motives, our choices and affectionsand actions. \nActually,in forming decisions as to what is to be willed, whatis to be done,a whole judicial process is involved. For example,Isit down to eat in order to refresh my strength. And so I takecou","cbCaimyjmcBkNEZh","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaimyjmcBkNEZh","pdf",3339567,36,"English","# Contents\n## Supernatural
