Each entry highlights distinctive wardrobe design and visual storytelling, from Art Deco decadence in Salome to Suprematist futurism in Aelita: Queen of Mars. Further selections cover Technicolor swashbuckling spectacle in The Adventures of Robin Hood, Eisenstein’s black-and-white opulence in Ivan the Terrible, and genre-bending costume realism in Angels and Insects and Down With Love.","# A Few Great Costume Movies You've ProbablyNever Heard Of\n\nThere are a lot of famous costume movies everyone needs to see,but chancesare, you have already heard of them:films like My Fair Ladv,Gone With TheWind,Bram Stoker's Dracula,Cleopatra,The Three Musketeers, etc. Here are afew you probably have not heard of,but should check out anyway:Salome(1923,Costume &Set design by Natacha Rambova),A silent filmversion of Oscar Wilde's deliciously decadent play about an evil nymphetwho tries to seduce a religious prophet, and after failing, has himkilled. Imagine the famous Beardsley drawings for Salome, filteredthrough 1920's Deco and Surrealist styles,in a production that reeks ofgay camp. It has a wig made of lit light bulbs, scantily clad men ineyeliner and painted nipples, blackface dwarves in elaborate costumes, and enough bugle beads on leading actress/director Alla Nazimova todecorate a drag show. \nAelita:Queen of Mars(1924,Costume Design by Alexandra Exter)ARussian silent film where a scientist, frustrated with his life in earlySoviet Russia, develops an imaginary life on Mars, where the futuristicinhabitants all wear clothing in the Suprematist artistic style.Greatvisual contrast between the gritty, realistic, eclectic clothing ofSoviet Russia in the 1920s,and the plexiglass &chrome wear of the sexyQueen and her downtrodden robot slaves. \n※ The Adventures of Robin Hood(1938,Costume Design by Milo Anderson)This big budget swashbuckler version of the familiar tale is repletewith colorful costumes, the better to show off the new 3-stripTechnicolor process with which it was filmed.Maid Marion looks sexyeven while covered head to toe in pseudo-medieval dress by the cleveruse of 1930's bias cutting to make the 12ᵗh century styles cling and flowlike art deco evening wear, \nIvan the Terrible Pts I&c2(1944 &1958,Costume Design by LeonidNaumov,Nadezhda Buzina,&M.Safonova)Eisenstein's Masterpiece on the16th Century Tsar is a visual feast in black and white with one shortsegment in color, filled with golds and reds.Shows pre-Petrine Russianstyles of all kinds,as well as a bit of Western European wear, allgiven a hint of exaggeration to forward character and emotional feel.Ivan's changing appearance as he ages and becomes more bitter andparanoid is especially riveting, making one wish Stalin had not stoppedEisenstein from filming the final part 3. \nAngels and Insects(1995,Costume Design by Paul Brown).A twistedlittle tale of love, sex,Darwinian naturalism and hidden incest.Scrupulously accurate period costumes nonetheless connect individualcharacters with red and black ants, butterflies, moths, sparTows, termite queens, and wasps.Costumes telegraph the positions ofcharacters through the shorthand of these animal types that are thesubject of the hero-naturalist's studies. \nTopsy-Turvy(1999,Costume design by Lindy Hemming)·Centering aroundthe lives of writer W.S.Gilbert and composer Arthur S.Sullivan duringthe conception(1884)and staging(1885)of their best known opera,TheMikado,Topsy-Turvy details the staging practices and the performers'lives in the most popular theatre company of the 19th Century. Not onlyare the 1885 street clothes of the companv recreated in naturalisticdetail, but the stage costumes and period stage makeup for The Mikado,Princess Ida and The Sorcerer are precise replicas of those used in theoriginal productions, opening an illuminating window onto Victoriantheatre practice. \nVatel(2000,Costume Design by Yvonne Sassinot de Nesle).Critics by andlarge hated this film, which sank nearly without trace in 2000,despitea script by Tom Stoppard, stars Gerard Depardu,Uma Thurman and TimRoth, and production design that is like a wet dream of life in LouisXIV's court.I can only guess that critics went in expecting adifferent ending than the one history tells us: Steward and chief chefFrancois Vatel killed himself on the last of three days of the King'svisit, ostensibly because he felt the food was not up to his exactingstandards. \nDown With Love","cbCaijcwCzFkykKH","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaijcwCzFkykKH","pdf",956481,3,1,"English","en",105,"# A Few Great Costume Movies You've Probably Never Heard Of\n## Salome (1923)\n## Aelita: Queen of Mars (1924)\n## The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938)\n## Ivan the Terrible Parts I & II (1944 & 1958)\n## Angels and Insects (1995)\n## Topsy-Turvy (1999)\n## Vatel (2000)\n## Down With Love (2003)","[{\"question\":\"Which older costume film is discussed first and what is its premise?\",\"answer\":\"Salome (1923) is first.
