In the kitchen, Hazel—my baking protégé, true-crime junkie and part-time college student—was attempting to weaponize powdered sugar. Her hair, which changed with the seasons and dessert specials, was currently a warm cinnamon shade with blonde highlights.  \nRenee, a recent retiree and our newest hire, came barreling out of the kitchen with a dusting of powdered sugar covering her face. “I did not know sugar could do that!”  \nI threw her a tea towel.“Hazel has a talent for making messes.”  \nRenee wiped off her face.“She sure does! But I have to tell you, Parker, honey, I do not fully comprehend her creative process.”  \nI nodded as I poured a black coffee for Mr. Henderson. Hazel’s“creative process” consisted of making the kitchen look like a bomb had gone off. But the end result was always—without a dusting of doubt—a chef ’s kiss.  \n“In all honesty, Renee, no one does. But at least you two finally agreed on this month’s dessert special.”  \nAfter several test batches (and one sugar-related meltdown), Hazel and Renee had settled on the perfect offering: Apple Dabbles—soft, apple-  \nkissed donuts dusted with cinnamon and powdered sugar.  \nI continued making lattes while Renee jumped in to help serve the customers with her welcoming Southern charm. She was especially helpful when Mrs. Pumpling was back at the counter for the third time that morning, claiming her maple scone wasn’t “mapley” enough.  \nIn case you were wondering: my favorite part of the day was the early morning calm—the sacred lull after waking up but before the crowded insanity hits. My second favorite? When Whit Hawthorne walks through the door.  \nThis morning, he strolled in with a smile, his laptop tucked under one arm and that hopeful look in his eyes, the one that said he needed caffeine, a favor, or both.  \nHe slid onto a stool like he belonged there.
