foolish or confident,\"If they'd just let me run this country,I'd show them how it ought to bedone”?It is this which gives its perennial fascination to the theme of Kingfor a Day—the beggar waking to find himself caliph,the ConnecticutYankee risen to be Boss of all England,the commoner suddenly investedwith royalty.  \nA Frenchman who has kingship thrust upon him is the subject of JohnSteinbeck's new book,which is filled with farcical situations and studdedwith epigrams.It may be called an extravaganza,a free-wheeling satire;but like all good satire,it has a serious and even a sad subject—in this case,the perennial difficulties of the French in establishing a stable government.Mr.Steinbeck takes us to a conference of French party leaders(held,presumably,at some time in the immediate Mr.Steinbeck’swonderfully named parties—find their own reasons for agreeing on therestoration of a king.  \nA burning question is,which king?For there are almost as many pre-  \ntenders as parties.Fortunately,at this point there is discovered the legiti-mate heir of the dynasty of Charlemagne,in the person of Monsieur PippinArnulf Héristal,a middle-aged,upper-middle-class Frenchman livingquietly on his income and practicing his hobby of amateur astronomy.He abhors the thought of being king,but is persuaded that his countryneeds him,and he accepts.There follows a series of uproariously funnyepisodes in which Mr.Steinbeck shows the effects of the French Restorationon everybody—from Soviet Russia to Louella Parsons—and gives himselfand the reader a magnificent time doing
