I loved my cafe nestled in the charming small town of Magnolia Grove. It was everything I’d dreamed of and more. And by more, I’m talking about my ongoing involvement in the town’s unusually high levels of crime and shenanigans. But I wouldn’t have it any other way. My years of true-crime podcasting had prepared me for this chapter in life, and I was grateful.  \nThanksgiving warmth wafted through the air, along with the delicious scents of roasted pecans, maple syrup and enough sugar to make your teeth hurt. For the upcoming holiday, Hazel and Renee—my loyal and polaropposite employees—had gone full tilt with the dessert special. They were calling it Parade of Praline Pie. One bite and it was all crackle and cream with a buttery crunch of praline melting into caramel, topped with a heaping dollop of whipped cream. The sticky-sweet dessert paired perfectly with the Harvest Harmony Latte—a rich, roasty espresso swirled with warm maple syrup and velvety steamed milk, finished with a dollop of cream and a sprinkle of sugared pecans and praline crumble. Every sip tasted like autumn in a cup.  \nMrs. Pumpling, one of our regular customers and town megaphone, approached the counter. The look on her face that morning seemed somewhat peaceful and void of complaints or grievances.  \nShe peered into the display case with a scrutinizing eye. “I think I’m ready for a slice of that pie,” she said.  \n“The praline and pecan?” I asked.  \n“Yes. I’m not a fan of the apple pie.”  \nI couldn’t fault her for her honesty. I smiled and dipped into the display case, taking out the Parade of Praline Pie and cutting a hefty slice.  \nRenee rushed out of the kitchen, straightening her smudge-free black apron.“Don’t forget the dollop!”  \nShe pointed to the little chalkboard sign on the counter that read in perfect cursive: This month’s specials … Parade of Praline Pie & Harvest Harmony Latte…Don’t forget the dollop!  \nHazel came out on Renee’s heels, her black apron covered in streaks of cream, butter, flour and who knows what else. In her typical fashion, the young college student had changed her hair color to match the season. This month? An auburn hue with soft maple wisps.  \n“I got it!” Hazel opened the small fridge below the counter and pulled out a tub of whipped cream. She topped off Mrs. Pumpling’s slice of pie with an enormous blob.  \n“Oh, honey, that’s too much,” Renee sang out. “It’s just supposed to bea dollop.”  \n“It’s fine.” Hazel slid the slice of pie over to a very pleased Mrs. Pumpling.  \nSuffice it to say, my two polar-opposite employees were still ironing out the wrinkles in their work styles.  \nWhit, my boyfriend and part-time town historian turned history podcaster, chuckled to himself over at his corner table.
