INTRODUCTION\n\nThe first attempt to establish an English settle-ment in Virginia having failed.a more determinedeffort was initiated in 1609.For the new \"VirginiaCompany\"a highly favorable charter was securedfrom King James, and at once a campaign launchedto raise the needed funds and enlist volunteers forthe proposed expedition.Inspired writers issuedpamphlets describing in glowing terms the riches ofVirginia and the advantages that would accrue toEngland from a political conquest of North America;ministers of the gospel, from pulpit and press, earnestly urged the Christian duty of carrying sal-vation to the benighted heathen and the desirabilityof extending the domain of Protestantism to the NewWorld;the Lord Mayor of London busied himselfwith soliciting gifts;the fifty-six Livery Companiesmade generous contributions;and books wereopened in the city for subscription by those whcwished to invest money in the enterprise as a busi-ness speculation. The response of the public wasinstant and enthusiastic.Even before the charterwas sealed it was able to list as \"adventurers\"in theCompany 21 peers,96 knights,53 captains,28esquires,and more than 400 others—professionalmen, tradesmen, and citizens from all walks of life. \nThat Shakespeare was deeply interested in thisresolute effort to plant across the seas a New Britain \ncan hardly be way,or were intimate friendsof his known friends.Henry Wriothesley,Earl ofSouthampton,to whom he had dedicated bothVenus and Adonis and Lucrece, was one of theprime movers in organizing the Company,in draft-ing its charter, and in directing its affairs.Amongthe incorporators of the Company were WilliamHerbert,Earl of Pembroke, and Philip Herbert,Earlof Montgomery, his recognized patrons,to whom,in gratitude for the \"so much favour\"they had ex-tended to him,the First Folio was dedicated. At thehead of the \"Royal Council for Virginia\"as set upby the charter stood Southampton and Pembroke. And many other of the leading spi","cbCaigpLZ2OxfWuw","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaigpLZ2OxfWuw","pdf",1604378,48,"English","# INTRODUCTION\n## The Virginia Company’s formation and fundraising\n## Public
