The argument outlines why Shakespeare achieves compelling female characters through deep insight into human nature, contrasting earlier assessments of genius and virtue. It then engages hostile criticism, especially by v. Hartmann, by examining Juliet and Romeo as the tragedy’s chief figures and responding to claims that Juliet is ill-natured, with reference to her reaction to Tybalt’s death and Romeo’s banishment.","# eminence have sueceeded in pro-ducing,in their tragedies great male characters;butgreat female characters have only been brought forth byeminent and high spirited genius. \nSo we may say that in the highest sense of the wordthe English poet Lord Byron, being deficient in moralsense and purity, has produced some quite deformed femalecharacters. On the other hand Homer,Sophocles,Goethehave developed the highest ideals of female excellence. In these great pocts this high ideal is that of the humannature, and it is rather in their female characters than intheir male that we recognize the most intrinsical individua-lities of these authors, because the elements of humannature which are widely separated in the varieties and sharpcontrasts of male character, more closely join themselvesin female character. \nAmong the great poets,above-mentioned,we must alsoenumerate the English poet William Shakespeare. They all willingly yield that the piece exerts a highlydramatical effect upon the hearer or reader, but they dis-agree with regard to its poetical and moral value.Amongthe hostile critics of this tragedy with respect to its moralvalue we must especially mention .v.Hartmann(v.R.u.J.von E.v.Hartmann,Leipzig). \nWe will now examine, where the criticism of Mr.Hart-mann difers from those of earlier critics and whether heis right in doing so.In order to be able to judge in thisrespect,we must turn our eyes especially upon the twochief persons of the tragedy,Juliet, daughter of countCapulet and Romeo, son of count Montague. \nAt the moment when Juliet receives the news ofher cousin's death and her husband's banishment shesays: \n„Why follow’d not, when she said,Tybalt's dead, \nThy father or thy mother, nay or both, \nWhich modern lamentation might have mov'd.“ \nWith reference to this passage,Mr.Hartmann callsJuliet ill-natured and evil-hearted;but we do not thinkhim to be right. \n十。 \nDuring her life,Juliet,a young girl of fourteen years, had
