While her aunt and uncle settle into the routines of the lodging, Elizabeth observes an English gentleman whose composed, low-display demeanor signals good breeding. She tests his presence through silent judgment—especially his lack of Italian—building anticipation for what this seemingly self-contained stranger may mean for the social and romantic dynamics ahead.","A DECIDEDLY BAD DECISION \nA Pride and Prejudice Variation \nMarian Fair bourne \n[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \nCopyright © 2026 Marian Fairbourne \nAll rights reserved \nThe characters and events portrayed in this book are fictitious. Wine arrived at once: with bread, with olives, with supper, with the bill, and very nearly, she suspected, with directions. By the second week she had begun to think the country considered thirst less a bodily condition than a lapse in judgment. \nShe sat near one of the long open windows of the common room, a glass before her and her aunt opposite, while her uncle had gone to inspect some question of horses, wheels, or road conditions with the seriousness he brought to transport in all its forms. Outside, the evening held that golden, softened brightness Italy seemed able to bestow even upon places that smelled faintly of dust, leather, and hot stone. Within, plates, voices, boots, and chairs made a cheerful confusion, the chairs especially being moved by men who appeared convinced that furniture ought never to remain where one had first found it. \nMrs. Gardiner, who had the useful gift of remaining composed wherever she was, cut a pear with neat attention. \n“You look entertained,” she said. \n“I am trying,” said Elizabeth,“to determine whether this country intends to sustain its visitors chiefly by scenery or intoxication.” \nHer aunt smiled.“You have survived both so far.” \n“For which I claim uncommon fortitude.” \n“And no little bread.” \n“I concede the bread.” \nHer aunt resumed her pear. Elizabeth let her gaze move idly across the room, with that species of attention which is directed toward nothing in particular until it very suddenly is. \nThere was an Englishman at the far end of the room. \nThat, in itself, was not extraordinary. English people, once released upon the Continent, had a way of turning up where one least desired to find them and then looking faintly injured by the local arrangements. But this one had already been at the inn since the afternoon, and though he had neither introduced himself nor sought introduction, he had been impossible not to notice. \nHe was alone, or near enough to it to signify the same. No servant hovered at his shoulder. No friend occupied the opposite chair. No valet appeared with cloaks, cases, wash-water, or any of the visible apparatus by which English gentlemen generally declared the scale of their comfort. Near him stood only a single travelling case, well-made but plain, and outside, she had noticed, a light chaise waited among the other vehicles with as little display as its owner.
