PREFACE\n\n\"Why would anyone want to be a dean?\"some of my readersmay ask. Most deans wonder this at times, too. But it will also beevident that we have satisfactions and compensations(I don'tmean monetary)—even thrills and joys some days. \n\"Why write this book?\"I ask of myself.I have written one bookand know it's no lark.Rough Road in the Rockies I wrote inorder to share an autobiographical story which was differentfrom the usual:not a great many city-bred girls married fox farm-ers and took up log-cabin life in the mountains.I write this ac-count for similar reasons:not a high percentage of people aredeans, and I have some experiences—humorous and otherwise—to share. \nAs with my first book,I should be at a loss for material had Inot kept notes through the years—not only notes from students,parents,co-workers,but experiences I have written at my type-writer at home at the end of a day. These I wrote partly so that Iwouldn't forget, partly to help clarify my thinking about how tohelp a student with a problem, and sometimes to blow off steam—as I frequently suggest that my students do. \nI've pounded at the typewriter my angry replies to accusationsof some parents or fellow workers—replies that I felt inhibited togive in actuality. It is a misfortune for this book that some of thegems of the blowing-off-steam variety are lost because I verbal-ized them to my husband Bob who was a more sympathetic listen-er than my typewriter. \nOther deais should write, for they may have a greater wealth ofexperiences, certainly different ones. Many have been in thisoccupation longer, since I was forty when I graduated fromcollege and entered my new profession. Now I am approachingmy last year in it as I near 65. \nWith a few exceptions, the names used in this book are not theactual names, and classroom designations have been changed \nHermina Gertrude Kilgore \nColorado Springs,ColoradoSummer,1976 \nCONTENTS \nChapter \n1 What Do You Do All Day?I2 My
