\n\"Wake up,little sister,\"he said.In the cot nextto his,Eve was still sleeping.Peter felt sorry forher.Eve was too young to remember what lifewas like before the war. \nIt was a war that seemed to go on endlessly.Last night, enemy bombers had flown right overthe roof of their house. The distant boom of theirfalling bombs had lasted for a long time. \nPeter wished he were still sleeping. He hadbeen dreaming of frying sausage. The war hadcaused food shortages, making meat almostimpossible to find.“Oh,if only Mother were \ncooking sausages for breakfast!”Peter thought.Hesniffed hopefully at the air.But all he could smellwas the cellar's coal dust. \n“At least,\"Peter thought to himself,\"I stillhave my jar of apple butter.\"He imaginedspreading the jar's delicious contents on somefresh bread.Fresh bread, like meat, was difficultto find in the stores. \nThe apple butter had been made by Peter'smother, using apples, sugar, and spices. She hadgiven him the jar on his last birthday.Peter haddecided to save it for when his brother Carl andhis father came home.Carl was a soldier fightingin the war.Papa had to live in a town far away sothat he could help make trucks for the war. \n“It's so dark in here,”Eve groaned.Themorning light barely entered the gloomy cellar. \nThe cellar was gloomy for a reason.BeforePapa had moved away, the rest of the family hadmade an agreement with him to stay safe fromthe enemy bombers by sleeping in the cellar.Papa did not want the enemy planes to see anylight from the house. So together with Peter hehad covered the cellar window with dark cloth. They had also tied bundles of rags and oldnewspapers to the window,so it wouldn't rattlewhen the planes flew overhead. \nThe Kissel family lived an hour's train rideaway from Berlin, the capital of Germany.Theplanes flew over their little town on their wayto bomb the capital. The townspeople couldsee the flash of the bombs exploding in Berlin.Sometimes they made the ground shake. \n“Peter,Eve,breakfast!”Mama called fromupstairs.Peter knew there wouldn't be anysausage.Still,he kept his hopes up.Maybe hismother had been able to get some fresh bread! \nBut there was only yesterday's bread with thebutter substitute that Peter hated. \n“Mama,Herr Braun has six dairy cows. Can't we buy butter from him?\"Peter asked.(Herr is the German word for“mister.”) \n“Only the soldiers get butter,”Mama said. \n“Carl is a soldier.Do you think he's beenlucky enough to have butt","cbCailZhlIdmRBru","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCailZhlIdmRBru","pdf",2327509,28,"English","# A Day in
