Amid preparations for brother Edward’s upcoming wedding, household routines intensify: servants clean, refurbish unused rooms, and manage a disastrous marquee trial run that leads to chaos with Father’s bee sanctuary. As the Vicar is chased by bees and relatives try to rationalize the prophecy, the narrator observes mounting unease, especially in Mother’s guarded attention to time and impending events.","A CUP FUL L OF PO ISON \nIsabella Bassett \n[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \nCopyright © 2025 Isabella Bassett \nAll rights reserved \nThis is a work of fiction. The murmur was low enough to suggest a desire for concealment, but in the hush of the drawing room the pronouncement carried. \nSince this was the fourth time she had drawn the ominous card this morning, however, no one paid it much heed. Only her two sisters, my aunts Mavis and Myrtle, still seemed to ascribe any significance to its recurrence. Each time the card sprang forth, they scrambled to stuff it back into the Tarot deck and then promptly reshuffled it with the wide-eyed look of serfs playing Russian roulette with their master ’s revolver. But their effort at hiding the card was thwarted each time. Death, it would seem, would not be ignored. \n“I hope it’s not the Vicar,” said Aunt Mavis, looking up from her place at the cards table. Her sisters followed her gaze towards the tall windows overlooking the gardens. \nJust at that moment, the Vicar was streaking past, shrieking, a swarm of bees in pursuit. It was owing to the bees that we were currently confined to the relative safety of the indoors. \nTwo weeks remained until my brother Edward’s wedding, and the household was in a flutter. With hordes of relatives and guests expected to begin arriving in the next few days, bedrooms not used since William III had visited for a fortnight in 1689, on his way to the Battle of Walcourt, had to be refreshed. Though the house was always beautiful, Mother would leave nothing to chance, or to Aunt Ida’s scrutiny. Servants were dusting, mopping, beating rugs, polishing brass, and cleaning silver. Every available ladder in the neighborhood was now propped up against a wall somewhere in the castle, and every boy and girl old enough to hold a feather duster was to be found at the top of said ladder stabbing at the cobwebs. \n“It’s harvest time, my dear,” Father had tried to reason with Mother.“The tenants need their children in the fields.” \nMother had waved his scruples away. Though the daughter of an American industrialist, she had taken to the role of a feudal ruler , upon marriage to Father, the Earl of Beasley, with aplomb.“I just know your Aunt Ida will use her stay here as an invitation to run a finger over theembrasures in the darkest tower,” Mother had countered. It was an objection Father could not refute. \nAs part of this general state of frenzy, the workmen tasked with erecting the large marquee Mother had ordered had insisted on a trial run this morning. They’d had their doubts the contrivance would fit in the space designated for it in the gardens. It hadn’t. In the process, an inopportune gust of wind had turned the unsecured marquee into something resembling the sail of a longboat. The tent had shot right through the lawn and into Father ’s bee sanctuary, wiping out beehives in its course . \nThe bees had not taken kindly to this Viking-like raid. \nTo help him corral the runagates, Father had called upon the Vicar, a fe","cbCaibS1WCKv6wvX","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaibS1WCKv6wvX","pdf",1513705,160,"English","en",105,"# Chapter 1\n## Summer 1926","[{\"question\":\"What omen keeps appearing in the household at the start of the story?\",\"answer\":\"The Tarot card labeled “Death” keeps being drawn, prompting fear and attempts to hide it in the deck.\"},{\"question\":\"Why are the characters confined indoors in this chapter?\",\"answer\":\"They are kept inside because bees are swarming and chasing the Vicar outside.\"},{\"question\":\"What event is the family preparing for during summer 1926?\",\"answer\":\"Brother Edward’s wedding, which is about two weeks away.\"}]","A Cup Full of Poison - Isabella Bassett | PDF",1785397480,246,{"code":4,"msg":30,"data":31},"ok",{"site_id":23,"language":22,"slug":32,"title":13,"keywords":33,"description":14,"schema_data":34,"social_meta":86,"head_meta":88,"extra_data":90,"updated_unix":27},"a-cup-full-of-poison-isabella-bassett","",{"@graph":35,"@context":85},[36,53,68],{"@type":37,"itemListElement":38},"BreadcrumbList",[39,43,47,50],{"item":40,"name":41,"@type":42,"position":11},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",{"item":44,"name":45,"@type":42,"position":46},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/","Document",2,{"item":48,"name":12,"@type":42,"position":49},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/story-novel/",3,{"item":51,"name":13,"@type":42,"position":52},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/a-cup-full-of-poison-isabella-bassett/114017/",4,{"url":51,"name":13,"@type":54,"author":55,"headline":13,"publisher":57,"fileFormat":60,"inLanguage":22,"description":14,"dateModified":61,"datePublished":62,"encodingFormat":60,"isAccessibleForFree":63,"interactionStatistic":64},"DigitalDocument",{"name":9,"@type":56},"Person",{"url":40,"name":58,"@type":59},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-08-04","2026-07-30",true,{"@type":65,"interactionType":66,"userInteractionCount":11},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":67},"ViewAction",{"@type":69,"mainEntity":70},"FAQPage",[71,77,81],{"name":72,"@type":73,"acceptedAnswer":74},"What omen keeps appearing in the household at the start of the story?","Question",{"text":75,"@type":76},"The Tarot card labeled “Death” keeps being drawn, prompting fear and attempts to hide it in the deck.","Answer",{"name":78,"@type":73,"acceptedAnswer":79},"Why are the characters confined indoors in this chapter?",{"text":80,"@type":76},"They are kept inside because bees are swarming and chasing the Vicar outside.",{"name":82,"@type":73,"acceptedAnswer":83},"What event is the family preparing for during summer 1926?",{"text":84,"@type":76},"Brother Edward’s wedding, which is about two weeks away.","https://schema.org",{"og:url":51,"og:type":87,"og:title":13,"og:site_name":58,"og:description":14},"article",{"robots":89,"canonical":51},"index,follow",{"doc_id":7,"site_id":23},{"code":4,"msg":5,"data":92},[93,96,100,104,109,114,119,124,129,132,136],{"id":11,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":12,"show_sort_weight":94,"slug":95},90,"story-novel",{"id":46,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":97,"show_sort_weight":98,"slug":99},"Literature",80,"literature",{"id":52,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":101,"show_sort_weight":102,"slug":103},"Exam",70,"exam",{"id":105,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":106,"show_sort_weight":107,"slug":108},5,"Comic",60,"comic",{"id":110,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":111,"show_sort_weight":112,"slug":113},6,"Technology",50,"technology",{"id":115,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":116,"show_sort_weight":117,"slug":118},7,"Healthcare",40,"healthcare",{"id":120,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":121,"show_sort_weight":122,"slug":123},8,"Research & Report",30,"research-report",{"id":125,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":126,"show_sort_weight":127,"slug":128},9,"Religion & Spirituality",20,"religion-spirituality",{"id":127,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":130,"show_sort_weight":127,"slug":131},"World Cup","world-cup",{"id":133,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":134,"show_sort_weight":133,"slug":135},10,"Lifestyle","lifestyle",{"id":137,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":138,"show_sort_weight":105,"slug":139},19,"General","general"]
