Upholding decent work is indispensable to dispel injustice and poor working conditions at the workplace. \nTheoretical reference: It is one of the key sustainable development goals the United Nations sets in which South Africa is a member state. Labour commissioners of the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration in South Africa play an integral role in accomplishing decent work through adjudicating labour disputes between employees and employers. \nMethod: The study adopted a systematic review method. The study extensively reviewed the available literature, which include published research articles, conference papers, reports and policy documents over the period 2012–2022 from Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar and ScienceDirect databases. \nResults and Conclusion: The study found unparalleled challenges, which include illiteracy and poor level of education among the complainants, mounting reported labour caseload, increase in labour matter reviews, re-filing of cases dealt with due to unimplemented awards, poor access to training of the commissioners, among others. \nImplications of research: The study provides critical policy implications to address labour commissioners' challenges in South Africa. The management must also ensure that the complainants have access to adequate technology whenever they contemplate conducting their dispute resolution process via digital platforms. \nOriginality/value: However, despite labour commissioners facing challenges linked to their work, which compromise their ability to discharge their duties effectively, studies have yet tobe conducted to specifically examine the challenges faced by labour commissioners in South Africa. \nKeywords: labour commissioners, workplace disputes, ccma, decent work, south africa. \nReceived: 11/27/2023 \nAccepted: 02/19/2024 \nDOI: [https://doi.org/10.55908/sdgs.v12i2.1681](https://doi.org/10.55908/sdgs.v12i2.1681) \na Masters Candidate in Human Resource Management, Department of Human Resource Management, Durban University of Technology, Durban, South Africa, [E-mail: mbekezeliphungula@gmail.com](E-mail: mbekezeliphungula@gmail.com), \nOrcid: [https://orcid.org/0009-0001-7831-1015](https://orcid.org/0009-0001-7831-1015) \nb PhD in Human Resource Management and PhD in Industrial Relations, Department of Business Management, University of Zululand, Bay, South Africa, [E-mail: uteter@unizulu.ac.za](E-mail: uteter@unizulu.ac.za), \nOrcid: [https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9086-1052](https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9086-1052) \nUMA REVISÃO CRÍTICA DOS DILEMAS DOS COMISSÁRIOS DOTRABALHO AO LIDAR COM DISPUTAS NO LOCAL DE TRABALHO NA \nÁFRICA DO SUL \nRESUMO \nObjectivo: O objectivo geral do estudo é rever a literatura existente sobre os imensos desafios enfrentados pelos comissários do trabalho sul-africanos ao lidar com conflitos laborais.
