The grandpa describes telephones without push buttons, limited electricity and lighting, outdoor plumbing and outhouses before modern sewer systems, and chamber pots for nighttime needs. was quite someparty. How does it feel to be eightyears old?\" \n\"I like it,Grandpa.Even thoughlam only two days older than I waswhen I was seven. How did youfeel when you were eight yearsold?\" \n\"Good question-and I do havesome memories. My birthday wasjust one week after school closedfor the summer, and at the partymy friend Bobby and I planned anovernight hike to celebrate mybirthday and freedom from class-es.We would take the trolley thatled to a park a couple of miles out-side of the city and then walk abouttwo miles further into a woodedarea near the river. It was reallyquite exciting for me,but my moth-er worried because in those daysthere were no cell phones and noway to keep in touch.\" \n\"Were there no telephones?\" \nT HE NE W S LE T T E R OF THE SE CU L A R F A MI LY N E T W O R K \n# A Conversation with Grandpa\n\nby Gerald A.Larue,University of Southern California Professor Emeritus \n\"Oh sure, but they were in private homes and businesses andusually fastened to a wall. There were no push buttons and theearpiece was separate from the mouthpiece. In those days youreally 'dialed a number'and hung up the receiver.\" \n\"What else was different?\" \n“Eighty years ago we lived in the city,so we had electricity一in some homes there were just singlelightbulbs hangingfrom acord in the middle of each room. Some farm homes usedkerosene lamps. And we had a bathroom and indoor plumbing.\" \n\"What do you mean by indoor plumbing?\" \n\"My uncle lived on a farm, and his toilet was outside in whatwas called an 'outhouse'-so when he had to go to the tolet he \naway,and they sprinkled sawdust and dirt to cover it upTheroom was off by itself, and the door was always closed-it was-n't too bad.Later they got proper plumbing.\" \n\"Sounds awful. What did you do for fun?You didn't have TV?\" \n\"There was no television,no computers, and no electronicgames.Eventually we got a radio, and we would sit around thatand listen to special programs.I read a lotand then we hadother indoor games-like some of the ones you play-Chutesand Ladders, checkers,Old Maid, and so onAnd we played out-side.There was a vacant lot across the street where we played \nwent outside. They had outdoorplumbing.\" \n\"Why didn't they put the toilet inthe house?\" \n“At that time they had nosewage system on the farm.So myuncle had dug a deep pit and putthe outhouse over it—there was aseat with a hole where you sat.\" \n\"What if they had to go in themiddle of the night?\" \n\"Under each bed was a cham-ber pot. They would use that.\" \n\"You mean they would poop in apot under the bed!Yuk!Who had toempty the pot?\" \n\"My aunt did.But later my uncleadded a room to the house anddug a deep pit so they had anindoor place to go.That was partic-ularly important when it rained orwas snowing.\" \n\"What happened to the poop?\" \n\"They left it there. They used todump lye in the pit to kind of burn it \nwinter 2004/05 \nEditor:Jan Loeb Eisler
