\nPREFACE.  \nTHE success which attended the publication of the Compendium of MajorCANDy's English and Maráthí Dictionary,has induced its Editor to undertakean abridgment of the invaluable work of J.T.MoLESWORTH,Esq.,—the Mar-thí and English Dictionary,—and he now presents the fruit ofhis labours to theenlightened pablic.It was a comparatively easy task for the Editor to preparean abridgment of the admirablc work of Major CANDy,but to prepare thisCompendium was by no means a light labour.Besides going over sixtythousand words,and nearly four times that number of significations,line byline,and selecting the most useful and practical terms with their synonyms,theEditor had to deal more than in thc former case with the language foreignto himself.All this has been done single-handed.He entreats the publieto look upon the work with an indulgent eye.He is sensible of the manydeficiencies and shortcomings which it contains.During the preparation ofthis work,which was begun in 1860,it has been the lot of thc Editor to livein the midst of a noisy neighbourhood,and he was required to devote hisattention to numerous pressing dutics,and earn his livelihood by the laboursof his pen.And now his heart overflows with gratitude to the great Disposerof all things,when he sees his laboturs in connection with this Compendiumbrought to a happy issue.  \nIn abridging the original work,the Editor has neither changed the styleof its learned and venerable Author,nor curtailed the number of significationsgiven.For the most part it will be found,that the abridgment consists in thecareful selection of the number of Maráthí words(which amount to upwardsof twenty-nine thousand),and the employment of not more than two synonynsgenerally,for every Maráthí term;only in a very few unimportant cases haveany of the significations been omitted.  \nThe Editor has done his best to render the work useful to all classes ofthe community,who are concerncd in the study and use
