46 No7■ Graymoor Ecumenical &Interreligious Institute ■ July/August 2017A Ministry ofthe Franciscan Friars ofthe Atonement \nA Christian Science View on Climate Justice \nBy Shirley Paulson \nlove birds. My husband,Dick, and I are birders.Rather-he is the birder;I'm the tag-along wife. But I still loveto learn with him.The birds are always teaching mesomething about God's creative power-its beauty, its joy, majesty, humor, intelligence, order, and harmony.I learn itthrough the songs, colors, flight, majesty, and their shock-ing behavior. There are birds that feed on the ocean, knownas \"skimmers.\"Others feed on the bugs that swarm aroundants, known as “ant birds.”Hummingbirds feed on nectar.Raptors feed on smaller birds, reptiles and mammals-eventhough it is hard to watch that part. Some birds make theirnests in elaborate bags that hang on branches, far from thepredators. Some make their nests out in the middle of asandy beach. The variety of life is beyond my imagination, but each one shows us something extraordinary about theworld we all live in together. They show us the value ofeach insect, each berry, and each nut.Their adaptation tosnowy conditions, the behavior of ants, the types of preda-tors,the scarcity of food, and the motion of water-all thesethings just hint at the interrelated details of the planet. \nI \nidentified (or,\"defined\"by the scientific community).Andofcourse, most ofthese birds we never see in North America. \nJust last month I had the amazing privilege and joy ofexploring birds deep in the forests of Brazil.I mean deep!We were hundreds of miles from the closest human settle-ment.Indigenous people had left many decades ago, andsmall groups of birders come in to stay at this small lodgeonly a couple of times a year.It was like witnessing a pristinesnapshot of God's creation with very little human interfer-ence.Each of the river tributaries from the Rio Roosevelt, where we stayed, separates some species from others, sowe could see how precisely birds adapt to their specificlocations. We also saw new species that have not yet been \nBut it is this love of birds and what they teach us of theworld that makes the next part of my story all that muchmore poignant.Just the year before,my husband and Iwent to Costa Rica.It used to be the most prized birdinghaven in the world. But too often, when we ventured intothe forests,we encountered an eery silence.Vast areas oflowland forests had been cut down and fragmented,caus-ing the highlands to lose their cloud cover.Birds that hadalways lived there could no longer survive without thecloud cover. This specific change in weather patterns hasalready prevented dozens of species from being able to feedand reproduce,so they have either died off or left the area. Those of us who love to get up early to hear the morningbird chorus at this time of year know how seriously wrongit feels when the chorus goes silent.Dick and I would leaveat daybreak each morning to go enjoy the morning chorussince their songs help us find them high in the trees, buteach morning we were greeted with an occasional call froma lone bird-reminding us of the birds that were supposedto be there, but were not. \nThe loss of species in some areas of Costa Rica wasstaggering. And I know this is only one snapshot view ofwhat has happened around the world as we bear witnessto climate change. But I want to tell just one more birdingstory that brings these two experiences into perspective. \n continued on page 2 \nDr:Shirley Paulson is the Head of Ecumenical Affairs atThe First
