mankind.It is the most irresistible force in the world.Be-cause of it we are alive today,and because of it our children and ourchildren's children shall live.All mankind is urged by the most strenuousurge known to man to pass it on forever.  \nIt is the most precious thing in the world.Without the eye there is nobeauty.Without the materials there is no building.Without man there isno world.The material out of which mankind is built stands alone.Allelse is froth and tinsel.  \nThis force is the foundation for all future advancement.If from thepast it has come,aided by the hand of Nature,in a steadily increasing,ever slightly improving stream,so in the future it may be made to run ina steadily increasing,ever slightly improving stream,aided by the hand ofman.Without this assumption,all advancement of the race ceases.Justas the education of the eye reveals to us new beauties in the rose,so theimprovement of the race reveals to mankind new beauties in the world,and new forms of usefulness—the making of a new world.  \nWe know not whence it came.Some believe that it evolved slowly andsurely under the direction of a great Master Hand and Guide,and somebelieve that it was created at once.Opinions differ,and what exact courseit took will always remain a mystery.  \nIts present state gives us reason for grave alarm.It can be shown thatthis force,in our great country,is not of the same fine quality that it wasonly a few generations ago.We know that if the deterioration continues,America will share the fate of the Roman Empire,and strife and carnageflourish
