Sect which was organ-ized in 1525 at Zürich in Switzerland.Mennonites were at firsta branch of the Anabaptists,a much persecuted group that hadsplit away from the Catholic Church.Their name comes from\"Menno Simons\",(1492-1559)a Catholic Priest, who after 1536became a leader in the Anabaptist movement in Holland andnorthern Germany. \nTired of persecutions,Mennonites living in the Netherlands andNorthern Germany began to move out.In 1683 a group came tothe U.S.A.and settled in Germantown,Pennsylvania.Enjoyingfreedom, they began to move westward through the Middle Westand up to Canada. At the end of the 18th century the RussianGovernment opened the doors for immigration and invited theNetherlands Mennonites to settle on the steppes near the Black Seain Southern Russia. The Russian Government promised them allthe freedoms and on top“65 Desjatins of land”(160 acres)perfamily. The first ones arrived in 1789 with many more to follow.During he 18th century many more came to the U.S.A.as well.Itwas about 150 years later that the fate of the Mennonites in Russiachanged suddenly.During World War One and followed by WorldWar Two,oppression and expropriation was applied. The Menno-nites were forced to move cgain-this time to Canada. With Ca-nadian doors wide open to immigrants, during the years 1923-1949thousands came to Canada and settled in Ontario and the PrairieProvinces. \nMENNONITES TO BRITISH COLUMBIA. \nA few Mennonites had come earlier to stop at Agassiz,BurnsLake and Kelowna, but it was actually not until 1928 that B.C.be-gan to draw these newcomers. It was under the administrationof the Liberal Government with the Hon.Edward Barrows as Mi-nister of Agriculture that Sumas Lakewas to be re-claimed forsettlement purposes. \nThe Land
