who aretongue-tied for the rest of the year. And there is indeed a largenumber of enjoyable songs to sing at Christmas, both carols andhymns. \nWhat often happens, though,is that a whole string of carols is sungone after the other purely for enjoyment, without bothering toomuch about the sense of the words. This is quite acceptable in relaxedsurroundings. But in church we need to pay more attention to whatwe sing. There is quite a variety of ideas and stories in Christmascarols and hymns. Some of them talk about the child in the manger. Some,of the angels singing Glory to God.But others, especially theolder ones, tell the whole story of Christ's life right up to hiscrucifixion and resurrection(e.g.No.33).Others again are notcontent just to tell a story but to explain its deep meaning as well (21, \n23,26).Then there are some carols which are so old that we haveforgotten their original meanings but which we enjoy singing just thesame(31,32,34). \nThe carols and hymns in this book have been arranged in differentclasses,to help in choosing the best one for a particular purpose.Aneffort has been made to separate the narrative from the moretheological songs;a well-balanced carol service would have a blend ofboth. There is also a list of familiar scripture passages showing whichcarols go best with them;this will help in making up services of'lessons and carols'. \n# THEMATIC INDEX\n\nCOMING \n1 O come,O come Emmanuel \n2 Christmas Eve(The Lord at first did Adam make)3 The Angel Gabriel(13a The Angel Gabriel (II)The Story \nNATIVITY \n4 A virgin
