Contrastive studies in linguistics:A bibliographical checklist(Wash-ington,D.C.:Center for Applied Linguistics,1961),a by-product of a projectof contrastive structure studies carried out by the Center for Applied Linguis-tics under a contract with the United States Office of Education,Departmentof Health,Education, and Welfare. \nFor present purposes,a contrastive structure study is defined as a systematiccomparison of selected linguistic features of two or more languages, the intentof which is not to demonstrate or establish genetic or typological relation-ships,but,typically,to provide teachers and textbook writers with a bodyof information which can be of service in the preparation of instructionalmaterials, the planning of courses, and the development of classroom tech-niques.This definition excludes certain linguistically oriented materials inwhich the contrastive element is of secondary importance,e.g.textbooks,reference grammars, etc. It also excludes, though this is more questionable, contrastive studies of two or more dialects of a single language. \nFollowing a general section, the entries are arranged alphabetically by foreignlanguage,Afrikaans-Zulu.(The editors have not set up a heading for English;such a heading would have brought under it more than half the entries in thebibliography.)Each entry is given in full only once, under the foreign lan-guage that stands first in the title or is cited first in the text, with cross-reference to it under the other language or languages involved in the contrast.Following the languages section, there is an alphabetical author index.Titleswhich came to the attention of the editors while the book was in press appearas addenda on page 37.The addenda are cross-referenced in the main textand have been included in the author index. All Cyrillic entries are givenin transliteration. There has been no attempt to standardize minor varia-tions in the various transliteration systems employed. \nIn the preparation of this volume the editors enjoyed the generous supportof colleagues on the staff of the Center for Applied Linguistics.Particularthanks are due to Dr.Charles A.Ferguson,Director of the Center,Dr.WilliamW.Gage,research linguist and Acting Director of the Languages Program,Miss Sirarpi Ohannessian and her staff in the English Program, and William \nA.Stewart,research linguist. The editors are especially grateful to Miss Amy \nE.Shaughnessy of the Publications Section for her patient assistance in thepreparation of the final manuscript. \nJ.H.H. \nF.A.R. \nWashington,D.C.
