Thank you for embracing the heroic level of patience it must take to be my partner in life. \nOne \n“And more of the Danishes, please,” Jillian said into the cell phone she had balanced between her shoulder and her ear, making it possible for her to use both hands and operate the milk frother without spilling yet another latte. Her first shift wasn’t even half over, but George would be stopping by soon to drop offa restock for her depleted bakery case. \nShe’d been so desperate for the extra income it hadn’t occurred to her to ask why ajob as simple as coffee cart barista didn’t have a mile long list of candidates. When her friend Kay’solder brother announced he was spending the summer in Mexico, and he needed someone to run his coffee cart, she’d leapt at the opportunity. Literally, she had jumped up, wrapped her legs around Gio’s waist and planted a loud, smacking kiss on his cheek. Gio, as always, had ignored her theatrics and asked her if she knew how to make a macchiato. One tiny fib later and Jillian was gainfully employed for her entire summer break. \nTurns out that running a coffee cart wasn’t merely an exercise in ordinary customer service. Customer service was something Jillian could do in her sleep. Smile, listen, nod, never ask open ended questions, wish everyone a nice day, never accept a date from a customer until you’ve seen his left ring finger. \nShe’d honed those skills in every menial job you could imagine over the past eight years as she slowly crawled her way through first her bachelor’s degree and soon, please God soon, her master’s degree. \nCoffee carts were a new beast to her. First of all, the term‘cart’ was misleading. Gio’s ‘cart’ was a ten-by-eight foot counter set up semi permanently outside of a large office building just on the edge of the city. Carts could be pushed. Gio’s Place needed to be secured each afternoon with special canvases and padlocks then surrounded by a retractable piece offence. The fence alone had almost outmatched her upper body strength that morning, and she’d been ten minutes late opening up. \nSecond ofall, people were grumpy in the morning without their caffeine, and heaven forbid she needed to consult a few note cards if they ordered an Americano. Which, for fuck’s sake, was literally diluted espresso. Pretentious assholes. But failure wasn’t really something Jillian tolerated in herself. Every obstacle life had ever thrown at Jillian had eventually been leveled to the ground, and she had no doubt that, after a trial period and a bit of practice, she’d master this too. In fact, she’d have Gio begging her to open a second cart and help him build his business into a caffeine empire. Which she would absolutely not do, because this job sucked so hard. \nJillian handed over the perfect latte and smiled cheerfully at the frustrated woman that had been tapping her fingernails on the counter since she’d tapped her credit card.“Enjoy your day!”she called loudly as the woman strode towards the doors to the big office building a significant number of her customers seemed to use. She didn’t have time to be insulted by the woman’s dismissive attitude. The line in front of her never seemed to get shorter. \nThree more lattes, another dumb Americano, and an explanation that pumpkin spice wasn’t an option in May, but they carried caramel all year long later and Jillian looked up to find the most beautiful man she’d ever seen staring down at his phone.
