We can live on little food but we can’t live without water. One of today’s deadliest killers of children worldwide is contaminated water. There are many ways to purify water but here are a few of the easiest. \nBoil contaminated water for 1 minute. You can even boil water (or cook food) in a wooden bowl, birch bark, pumpkin gourd, avocado shell or coconut shell over an open fire as long as the flames do not pass the waterline. \nSolar Disinfection. Use clear plastic bottles ( hard bottles will not work) . Remove labels, fill bottle with water, seal, shake and leave lying on it's side in the sun for 6 hours (will not work in the rain) . To reduce time get a black sharpie and color the exterior of the bottle. This will cause the bottle to heat up faster. \nIf you have a cell phone (may require USB adapter), tablet or laptop you can purchase an aquarium UV filter light for $4 dollars. Plug the UV light's USB cable into your laptop, turn on the light and insert the UV light into a bucket of water. Stir for 3 minutes. The UV light will eliminate pathogens. \nWater Filtration. To build a filtration system you will need: A 2 liter plastic bottle with the bottom cut out. A cap with a hole in it and a piece of cloth. Charcoal (produced without fuel), sand and gravel. You will need a container with a lid for storing clean water. Clay pots will increase water's shelf life. \nFollow layering in the order noted above. If you've already boiled your water for a minute, then just use a coffee filter or clean wash cloth to filter out impurities. Seal filtered water in a container and store. You can also create a portable filter by inserting a small piece of cotton inside of a straw. \nRainwater Caching. Rain is a great tool for combating drought.
