aproblem withoutfurther diagnostics.Inspect all vacuum hoses for correct routing, pinches, cracksor disconnects.Be sure to inspect hoses that are difficult tosee.Inspectall the wires in the engine compartment forproperconnections, burned orchafed spots, pinched wires or contactwith sharp edges or hot manifolds. This visual/physicalinspection is very important. It must be done carefully andthoroughly. \n## Basic Knowledge and Tools Required\n\nTo use this manual most effectively, ageneral understandingof basic electrical circuits and circuit testing tools is required. You should be familiar with wiring diagrams, the meaning ofvoltage, ohms, amps and the basic theories of electricity. You should also understand what happens if a circuitbecomes open, shorted to ground or shorted to voltage. \nTo perform system diagnostics, several special tools andequipment are required. Please become acquainted with thetools and theiruse before attempting to diagnose the system.Special tools that are required for system service areillustrated in this section. \n## Electrostatic Discharge Damage\n\nElectronic components used in control systems are oftendesigned to carry very low voltage, andare very susceptibleto damage caused by electrostatic discharge. It is possiblefor less than 100 volts of static electricity to cause damageto some electronic components.By comparison,it takes asmuch as 4,000 volts for a person to feel the zap of a staticdischarge. \nThere are several ways a person can become staticallycharged. The most common methods of charging are byfriction and by induction. An example of charging by frictionis a person sliding across a seat,in which a charge of asmuch as 25,000 volts can build up.Charging by inductionoccurs when aperson with well insulated shoes stands neara highly charged object and momentarily touches ground.Charges of the same polarity are drained off, leaving theperson highly charged with the opposite polarity.Staticcharges of either type can cause damage. Therefore,it is \nimportant to use care when handling and testing electroniccomponents. \n## Engine Wiring\n\nWhen it is necessary to move any of the wiring, whether tolift wires away from their harnesses or move harnesses toreach some component, take care that all wiring is replacedin its original position and all harnesses are routed correctly. If clips or retainers break, replace them.Electrical problemscan result from wiring or harnesses becoming loose andmoving from their original positions,or from being rerouted. \n## Engine Control Module(ECM)Self-Diagnostics\n\nThe Engine Control Module(ECM)performs a continuousself-diagnosis on certain control functions. This diagnosticcapability is complemented by the diagnostic procedurescontained in this manual. The ECM's language forcommunicating the source of a malfunction is a system ofDiagnostic Trouble Codes(DTC's).The DTC's are two digitnumbers that can range from 12 to 81.When a malfunctionis detected by the ECM,a DTC is set and the MalfunctionIndicator Lamp(MIL)is illuminated. \n## Malfunction Indicator Lamp(MIL)\n\nThe Malfunction IndicatorLamp(MIL)is partof the DiagnosticTrouble Code(DTC)tool, orit can beadashmounted warninglight on some applications. \n● If present,it informs the operator that a problem hasoccurred and that the boat should be taken for serviceas soon as reasonably possible. \n● It displays DTC's stored by the ECM which help thetechnician diagnose system problems. \nAs a bulb and system check, the light will come “ON”withthe key
