They lived happily in a big farmhouse with Farmer Ray. They were good friends. One day, Farmer Ray was pushing his favorite wheelbarrow filled with carrots. It hit a rock and fell over onto the grass. As he turned the wheelbarrow over, it began to speak. \n“I am a magic wheelbarrow,” it said.“Make a wish. Come with me,” said Farmer Ray.“We can walk in the sand. We can learn to surf.” \nThe animals looked at Farmer Ray in disbelief.“The beach?”they yelled.“Farm animals don’t live at the beach!” \nBut Farmer Ray wanted to go.“If you can pay the bills, you can stay here at the farmhouse.” \nHorse, Rooster, and Cow went into the parlor to talk over their big decision. They decided to turn the parlor into a coffeehouse. The animals said goodbye to Farmer Ray. They got to work. \nSoon they opened the Barnyard Café. By the end of the month, the animals had enough money to pay the bills and hire a cook. Their business grew. A newspaper reporter even wrote a story about them. \nGenre Passages • Grade 3 • Unit 5 • Weeks 3 and 4 A1 \nGenre Study: Fairy Tale \nName \nMeanwhile, Farmer Ray was tired of walking in the golden sand. \nThe only surfing he was doing was on the Internet.
