Castillo  \nAncestral beliefs and creation myths about the way the world was formed, to the deities and spirits that live among us, have long existed prior to the colonization of Filipino cultures. Religious conversion has historically been used along with colonization to erase those stories and eliminate ancestral traditions in order to form a monotheistic narrative. In focusing on the Philippines, the research illustrates how mythologies within the culture accepted a broad range of polytheistic beliefs, sexual fluidity, and gender nonconformity. By acknowledging and preserving these mythologies and ideologies, one’s identity may be shifted to acceptance and inclusivity of their longstanding presence, justified by ancestral beliefs while connecting spiritually to ancestors. In doing so, traditions and practices of cultural ancestors are upheld while directly opposing the effects of religious conversion through colonization by keeping these stories alive.  \nKeywords: Mythology, Myth, Religion, Decolonization, Ancestors, Philippines, Sexuality, Gender nonconformity  \n“M  \nythology” as defined in the Oxford Dictionary, is the“collection of myths, especially one[s] belonging to a  \nparticular religious or cultural tradition” (“Mythology,” 2003) . Mythology also connotes a spiritual and cultural connection through stories of folklore, fantastical beliefs, and deities that connect us to our ancestors in a time before standardized religion. Mythical stories are often those of the creation of cultures and peoples. Myths explain the inexplicable, and describe the good and evil of the world through gods and monsters. As our  \nsociety excels forward into an increasingly technological and modern era, myths are not as circulated through storytelling. The cultures that once kept them in circulation have integrated into common religion, and science explains creation. Holding onto myths and storytelling preserves a connection to the spiritual world and the beliefs ofour ancestors, while fostering opposition to historically colonizing standardized religions, and establishes a cultural identity deeply rooted in tradition and cultural practice.  \nAmada (Ama) M. Castillo is a Filipino and Mexican woman currently pursuing a degree in English at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. While myths can be formed into stories for religions, religions as practiced by individuals and communities view the stories as fact and truth. Myths can be a part of religion as stories, such as the myth of Adam and Eve within Christianity. Both myths and religion can also have practices that show loyalty to beliefs, like prayer or sacrifice.
