It explains how the Wright brothers’ successful 1903 flight accelerated scientific progress, then describes the expansion of the aviation industry, flight schools, and university aeronautics programs. The work emphasizes continuing innovation in aerodynamics, propulsion, materials, structures, stability, and control, and looks ahead to faster, more fuel-efficient, environmentally friendly, and interesting history.Throughout time, people imagined being able to fly. They observed birds in flight. They also studied windmills.Early on,the Chinese flew kites.LaterItalian artist and inventor Leonardo da Vinci drew detailed designsof flying machines.Years passed as experimentation blossomed inmany areas of science and mathematics.Scientists and engineersidentified and understood basic theories of motion. They calculatedthe mathematical formulas that would help make the science of flightpossible in the future. \nAt the time of the Industrial Revolution (about 1760-1840)manynew scientific and technological inventions appeared.Like engineerstoday, people of the time began to ask questions, define problems, and design and test possible solutions. Many of the pioneers ofaviation were simply interested in flight. They were handy with toolsand possessed a spirit of invention. Most designed, built, and testedtheir own model flying machines.Often these early models did notlive up to expectations. What did these clever individuals do then?Instead of quitting, many worked harder. They found ways to improvetheir crafts through additional testing, data collection, and redesign. \nDuring the mid-to late 1800s,several individuals dedicated theirwork to searching for ways to fly. They designed and
