Harder to believe that in 1976 we focused the business exclusively on high performance. Hardest to believe is that I’m still here writing the inside page for the catalog! But what an incredible ride this is. Speed, technology racetracks, blisteringly fast cars, sportsmen, families and, from the first lap to the finish line, that spirit that makes the US great. When I look back over this legacy of speed, I know that we made the sport a little bit better by being in it.  \nJim Beattie took to the sport like a set of drag radial tires on a freshly prepped track. From his humble beginnings with three unruly brothers, they terrorized their hometown with cars that were too fast, too loud, and too flashy. A stint in the Navy refined his homegrown machine talent  \ninto a skill of precision and excellence. Bored by passenger cars, Jim made the leap to a position where his craft met speed and technology.  \nWhen Jim figured out that torque converters could perform so much better than they did back in the 70’s and that transmissions could offer so much more than we asked of them, Jim went to work designing and building state of the art equipment that created champion after champion, year after year. When Jim decided that harmonic balancers should give better engine protection than what was available, he hit the drawing board again and the Super Damper was born.  \nFollowing in his footsteps and blessed with his genes, JC, Jr. grew up with his hands in anything he could take apart and rebuild. When OEM transmission cases couldn’t hold up anymore, JC went to work and started a mock-up before scanning and working on a new mold; continuing the family’s quest for the best by designing and keeping ATI products at the forefront of cutting-edge technology. Now, James Ill runs and works on his Jr. Dragster, and won the PDRA Top Jr World Championship last year.  \nHow lucky to be part of a sport where winning is important but to get there you need not only talent but superb equipment. How lucky to be in a sport where sportsmen are still gentlemen and scuff ups are settled without mechanical interference; where families come to be together and little kids can  \nrace a junior dragster surrounded by a United Nations of other kids, where the only difference they notice is the design of the car or who has the cooler helmet paint.  \nWhat a gift I have been given to live in this world of performance equipment, precision machines, amazing staff, incredible racers, working with family. It is just too good to give up.  \nI hope the legacy of speed and performance survives another 65 years.
