This is an English class unlike any other---this year, you will be challenged to grow in reasoning, argument, and critical thinking skills while experiencing some great works of nonfiction (and a few fiction pieces, too!) . We will focus on traditional texts, like full-length novels, but we will also look at a variety of other essays, Scripture, podcasts, documentaries, TED Talks, news articles, scientific journals, films, interviews, nonfiction texts, and speeches. I am excited for all of us to embark on the inaugural year of this class together! Be prepared to be active in this class! My classes are most successful when students are willing to participate and discuss/engage! \nAll of this to say: you will definitely be busy this year! However,“AP” does not necessarily [equal more or unrealistic work...it](equal more or unrealistic work...it) is just a different type of work and thinking. This is considered a college level course, and you will be challenged with the maturity and thoughtful approach that a university class requires. Additionally, we will work diligently throughout the year to prepare for the AP exam next May and submit your portfolio elements to the College Board along the way. \nThat said, our course will be a great time to build a little community inside of our larger school. I require your best each day, and you can expect the same from me. Hopefully by the end of the year, you will have had a great time while also reading and analyzing great literature, and you will feel prepared to slay the AP Seminar portfolio and exam. More than that, I hope that you take the ideals and skills of our course and utilize them to serve the Lord in your chosen paths. \nThis document has the summer reading and assignments listed. All materials are due by the first day of class unless otherwise indicated, and please contact Mrs. Dixon if you have any questions in the meantime! Have a great summer and take some time to enjoy these works. \nOnward and Upward, \nMrs. Dixon \n[mcdixon@hpcacougars.org](mcdixon@hpcacougars.org) \n2 \nSummer HW and Assignments list \n**Please fill out this survey to help me plan our year together!** \n1. Read and take notes on the entirety of Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers and be prepared for an in class test during the first week of classes. \na. You can borrow from the library, listen to the audio, or order your own copy. \n2. Podcast assignment (LISTEN AND EVALUATE) \na. Listen to THREE separate episodes of THE SAME podcast (see options below) . \ni. I LOVE podcasts and listen to them every day. They are a great way to learn and expand your mind. I don’t always, in fact I often don’t, agree with everything I listen to. That’s okay! It helps me solidify what I know/believe and critically think about it. \nb. Take notes while you listen! It will help you later on the presentation. I want to see the notes on the first day of class. Your notes should include summary info, your thoughts/questions as you listen, and vocab words you may not know or stand out to you. \n3. Create a 5-7 minute presentation reflecting on the podcast episodes that you listened to. Presentation/Reflection Assignment \n For this assignment, you’ll listen to THREE separate episodes of THE SAME podcast show on Spotify (or platform of your choice) . \n Revisionist History by Malcolm Gladwell \n Honestly by Bari Weiss \n The Holy Post by Phil Vischer and Skye Jethani \n Presentation \n Author’s ethos (authority/credibility): “introduce” the podcast host(s) and any guests with pertinent background information and qualifications from the episodes you listened to. \n Summary: what are the main points of each episode? \n Reflection: what are your thoughts on each episode? Connect it to other things that you’ve learned about. \n Vocabulary Challenge: \n Choose five new vocabulary words (or, words/phrases used that you thought were interesting if you already know all of the words :) and","cbCaiejIrhroruaQ","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiejIrhroruaQ","pdf",357065,"English","# Summer Reading and Assignments\n## Course expectations and overview\n## Summer homework and assignments\n### Outliers reading and in-class test\n### Podcast assignment: listen and evaluate\n### Presentation/Reflection assignment\n## Submission deadline","[{\"question\":\"What is required for the Outliers summer reading component?\",\"answer\":\"Read and take notes on the entirety of Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers and be prepared for an in-class test during the first week of classes.\"},{\"question\":\"How should students handle the podcast assignment?\",\"answer\":\"Listen to THREE separate episodes of the SAME podcast, take notes while listening (including summary, thoughts/questions, and vocabulary), and bring the notes on the first day of class.\"},{\"question\":\"What must be included in the 5–7 minute presentation and when is it due?\",\"answer\":\"The presentation must include the podcast host(s) ethos with episode-based background, main points summary for each episode, and reflections connecting ideas to other learning, plus a vocabulary challenge using five new words.
