underdevel-
oped sense of proportion and consid-
erable want of editorial supervision.
Nevertheless,in many respects Thy
Neighbor's Wife is a noteworthy con-
tribution to the recently inaugurated
history of popular culture,subdivision:
trendy sex.
It also represents something of a
journalistic tour de force,a sex-
junkie's War and Peace in which ap-
parently unconnected people and ir-
relevant events are revealed to possess
odd and surprising interrelations,if ex-
actly to what they are relevant we are
left at times in doubt.
Talese devoted eight years of his life
to consumer sex research,and another
year putting it on paper. An ardent re-
porter,he not only directly interviewed
most of the living personae but fre-
quented porno shops,nudist camps
and massage parlors,even working in
one of the latter as a manager for sev-
eral weeks in order to question both
customers and masseuses.
Another Disenchanted Catholic,
Talese finds the Church,particularly
its Irish element,to be the chief in-
stigator of the suppression of sex by
restricting intercourse to the married
state and frowning remorselessly on
masturbation and other contemporary
diversions such as adultery. | At bottom,Thy Neighbor's Wife is a
convoluted exposition of two tenu-
ously related areas of recent sexual
"progress"—the commercial publica-
tion of sexually explicit writing and
photographs for entertainment (known
to its opponents variously as por-
nography,obscenity,smut and filth),
and,second,the development of sex-
ually emancipated commercial service
stations from the sophisticated en-
counters of the "ballroom"of Califor-
nia's Sandstone retreat,to New York's
tawdrymassage salons.
Talese executes his narrative by
means of case hstories of supposedly
typical protagonists of the new sexual-
ity, such as the ascent of Chicago's
Harold Rubin from obscurity to the
relative fame of a massage parlor
operator,Hugh Hefner's meteoric suc-
cess and subsequent emotional dilem-
mas,William Hamling's unsuccessful
appeal to the Supreme Court of a por-
nography conviction,and the evolu-
tion of John Williamson's Sandstone.
The Sandstone Story surely provides
the central "plot"of the hefty volume,
being awarded eleven of twenty-five
chapters and a chunk of the epilogue.
Unfortunately,Talese seems unable to
have achieved much of a resolution to
the often melodramatic conflicts of
his cast.Similarly,the Hefner Chroni-
