1970Volume 86,Number 2 \n# 13 ELECTRONIC DEVELOPMENTS CITED BY INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH\n\nI·R 100 was initially started in 1963 when the editors of IndustrialResearch magazine recognized the need to acknowledge the moresignificant new products developed during each year. \nSince then, the I·R 100 has grown to include an exhibit of thosewinning products,a National Industrial Research Week(incorporatingopen houses, exhibits, and other activities at the nation's \n16,000 industria1 laboratories),a National Conference onIndustrial Research, and a black-tie awards banquet for the 100winners. \nIndustrial Research Week wil1 be September 13 through 19.Onthe evening of the 17th,a banquet at the Museum of Science &Industry in Chicago wil1 serve to round out the week's activities. At the banquet,Nei1 P.Ruzic, president of Industrial ResearchInc.,wil1 introduce and present awards for the 100 mostsignificant technical products developed in 1970. \nSome interesting highlights on the 1970 competition are as follows: \nAlthough there are 100 awards, there actually are 103 winningproducts. One company was given a single award for two relatedproducts, and in two other cases,a joint award was presented totwo companies for similar products. \nAbout half of the winning products are instruments, with theanalytical instruments category accounting for the largest share(20 winners). The breakdown of winners by the 13 product categoriesis:analytical instruments...20;chemicals and plastics...11;computers and electronic data processing...10;ceramics and othernonmetallics..8;lasers and electro-optics...8;electronic \ninstruments...7;oceanographic equipment...7;other products...7;elect ronic and mechanical components...5;measuring and testingequipment...5;metals and alloys...5;vacuum and cryogenicequipment...5;and photographic and optical equipment...2. \nOf the 100 winners,Electro-Technology Newsletter has selectedthose products that are of particular significance to the fieldof elect ronics.Included in the review on the subsequent pagesare electronic devices and systems,computers,electro-mechanicaldevices,and electronic materials. \nCopyright 1970,by Industrial Research Inc.,Bever1y Shores,Ind.Reproduction prohibited without permission. \nEBR-1is an electron beam recorder developed by Ampex Corp.'sResearch and Advanced Technology Section,Redwood City,Ca1. \nThis analogue recorder/reproducer has a useful bandwidth of 500 kHzto 100 MHz and finds use in recording wideband data and in spectrumsurveillance. \nThe instrument uses Eastman Kodak direct positive,scintillator-coated EBR film type so/214 in a 35-mm nonsprocketed format asthe recording medium \nAn input signal modulates the electron beam, which scans the filmin a zigzag pattern.Following the recording, the exposed filmis removed and chemically processed. \nFor playback, the unmodulated beam strikes the scintillator \nsurface where it generates a minute light spot. This spot accuratelyfollows the recorded pattern and causes the light to be modulatedby the transmittance variations of the developed film.A PMtube converts the transmitted 1ght to an electrical output signal. \nDevelopers:Joachim Diermann, manager, electron beam recordingsection,Edward Engberg and Raymond Ravizza, associate membe rsof the research staff.Price:$400,000. \nAn oscilloscope that offers real-time response from dc to 250 MHzwithout sacrificing sensitivity or plug-in versatility has beendeveloped by Hewlett-Packard Co.'s Colorado Springs Div.,ColoradoSprings,Colo. \nThis compact plug-in unit has a CRT helical transmission line vertica1deflection system with a deflection factor of 3 V/cm and abandwidth of greater than 500 MHz.Other outstanding featuresinclude a CRT photographic writing speed of 4 cm/ns,H-P-developedmonolithic transistor arrays in the vertical amplifier to providea dc to 250 MHz bandwidth with 10 mV/div deflection factor, anda time base with a magnified horizontal sweep speed to 1 ns andtriggering to 500 MHz. \nDevelopers:James
