Process Flow Diagram (PFD)\u003Cbr>The process flow diagram (PFD) represents a quantum step up from the BFD in terms of the amount of informaƟon that it contains. The PFD contains the bulk of the chemical engineering data necessary for the design of a chemical process. For all of the diagrams discussed in this chapter, there are no universally accepted standards. The PFD from one company will probably contain slightly different informaƟon from the PFD for the same process from another company. Having made this point, it is fair to say that most PFDs convey very similar informaƟon. A typical commercial PFD will contain the following informaƟon:\u003Cbr>1. All the major pieces of equipment in the process will be represented on the diagram along with a descripƟon of the equipment. Each piece of equipment will have assigned a unique equipment number and a descripƟve name.\u003Cbr>2. All process flow streams will be shown and idenƟfied by a number. A descripƟon of the process condiƟons and chemical composiƟon of each stream will be included. These data will be either displayed directly on the PFD or included in an accompanying flow summary table.\u003Cbr>3. All uƟlity streams supplied to major equipment that provides a process funcƟon will be shown.\u003Cbr>4. Basic control loops, illustraƟng the control strategy used to operate the process during normal operaƟons, will be shown.\u003Cbr>It is clear that the PFD is a complex diagram requiring a substanƟal effort to prepare. It is essenƟal that it should remain uncluƩered and be easy to follow, to avoid errors in presentaƟon and interpretaƟon. OŌen |  |  |  |  |\n| PFDs are drawn on large sheets of paper (for example, size D: 24 in × 36 in), and several connected shee may be required for a complex process. Because of the page size limitaƟons associated with this text, complete PFDs cannot be presented here. Consequently, certain liberƟes have been taken in the presentaƟon of the PFDs in this text. Specifically, certain informaƟon will be presented in accompanying tables, and only the essenƟal process informaƟon will be included on the PFD. The resulƟng PFDs will re clarity of presentaƟon, but the reader must refer to the flow summary and equipment summary tables order to extract all the required informaƟon about the process.\u003Cbr>Before the various aspects of the PFD are discussed, it should be noted that the PFD and the process th described in this chapter will be used throughout the book.
